    Sarah Evans was glad civics class was almost over. Miss Denton was nice, but civics was boring. A slight knock on the door caught her attention. Ellen Jacobs and a girl with light-yellow skin and long black hair entered.

    Hello, Ellen, and who have you brought us? Miss Denton asked.

    This is Suli Lang. She comes to us from Vietnam, Ellen explained.

    Welcome, Suli. Thank you, Ellen, Miss Denton said.

    Welcome, Ellen said, leaving the room.

    Now you need a desk, Suli. Take the third one on the second row.

    Thank you, Suli said barely above a whisper. She made her way to the desk with her eyes on the floor. Her desk was across the aisle from Sarah's.

    Welcome, Sarah mouthed as Suli turned her head slightly toward her.

    All right, class, that's all for today. Read pages 11–13. Suli, there isn't an extra book in here. I'll have you one in the morning.

    The dismissal bell rang. All the students filed quickly from the room except Sara, who waited by the door for Suli.

    Hey, I thought you might need help getting around, she said.

    Thank you. Yes, I do, Suli said in a low voice. Sarah noted a slight accent.

    Let me see your schedule.

    Suli shook her head in confusion.

    It's the yellow card Miss Thompson gave you.

    Oh, goodness, wait a second. She began frantically searching in her school bag.

    Take you time. We have time to get to class, Sarah said.

    Here it is, Suli said, looking at it. I have English next.
