Chapter 1
The year is NUWE 30, the thirtieth year since humanity’s single greatest achievement. In 2030, humanity created the world’s first and only artificially intelligent robot called Uno. Uno united the conflicting Countries of the Old World into the first global technologically advanced country called The New United World Earth under his honest, fair, and just leadership. The NUWE citizens live free, united, happy, comfortable, entertained, and aware lives. They are connected to a very advanced digital technological database through devices called chips. The chip benefits the person by granting full accessibility to all of the various technological functions of society. Citizens are chipped at birth by having the very small device implanted in the hand for a price. When the chip can’t be bought, the citizen goes unchipped.
Unchipped people aren’t connected to the technology and are the low class citizens of the NUWE The real citizens that have the chip treat them like inferior humans and undesirable citizens of the NUWE.
The NUWE is divided into Squares, with each Square serving an individual necessary function, allowing the world to operate as one. The Luxury Square is where the very rich people live in large extravagant houses on very spacious properties. This is where JJ’s parents lived before he was born. The vast majority of citizens living in the Luxury Square are chipped. The Market Square is a giant shopping center. This is where food, clothes, and technological accessories are purchased. Banishment Square is where the Peace Bots take people when their citizenship is revoked for committing punishable acts. It is made up of large prison camps that criminals live in for the rest of their lives, one way or another. The Peace Bots are robots that are connected to the database and patrol the NUWE keeping it safe from danger.
The Slum Square is split in half. One half is a slummy, run-down, and dangerous ghetto where the poorest people in the NUWE live. It is heavily stricken with poverty and crime, and nobody goes there except for the people who live there. JJ lives in the other half of the Slum Square. It is primarily made up of many tall apartment complexes of various sizes, shapes, and colors. Different groups of combinations of convenience stores and fast-food restaurants are built into a section of each apartment complex. The apartment buildings are lined up and joined together in some places by bridges. There are hallways that extend outside to conjoin the buildings together. Some of the buildings are connected to the various Ports spread throughout the Squares. People can take an elevator or stairwell to access the boarding levels of the connecting Port. People can get between their apartment and the nearest port without going outside. Outside the gaps and in between buildings form courtyards and streets where people gather. Nobody uses cars in the Slum Square because everything is in walking distance, so the streets are like big sidewalks.
The vast majority of people in the Slum Square are not chipped. In the Slum Square, the roles are reversed: the chipped people are the outcasts. JJ’s father was a neuroscientist until he was banished before JJ was born. Then JJ’s mother gave birth to him alone and had him chipped. When JJ was young, his mom ran out of money and they moved to the Slum Square. He did not fit in and was alienated by the majority of his peers because of the chip. He spent most of his time alone studying some of his father’s seemingly endless research on the mind. Once he began understanding some of it, he began talking about it to anyone who would listen. His perception was heavily influenced by his father’s research and became very different from the normal perceptions that all of his peers seemed to share. Over time, he gained a few friends but
