Amber's Journey - Rene Oram
The time was 1800s. One day, out on the prairie in Kansas, Amber was left all alone. One day, out on the prairie of Kansas. She and her parents were making a long journey to the Colorado territory. They were filled with many promises for a better life. Amber, now eleven years old, witnessed the brutal, savage deaths of both her parents. Amber lie under the covered wagon, scared and frightened to death. As she lie there, she could hear her father screaming to the savages for them not to harm her mother. Her father begged and pleaded for her life, offering his own life instead. It wasn’t long, and they had slit his throat, and then they proceeded to scalp him. But, before they took his life, he was forced to watch them murder his beloved wife.
They removed her mother’s clothes from her delicate, fragile body. They put a rope around her neck and drug her from behind their horse. When she couldn’t hang on anymore, they stopped, only to sling the arrows into her back. Her husband screamed, and as his cries of terror only made the savages more aggressive for he knew that he was next.
Amber was now all alone, full of sorrow, hate, and disbelief as to what she had just witnessed. She was more fearful when the arrows of fire flew into the wagon, setting it on fire. Amber remained ever so quiet, scared and fearful that they would find her.
Amber remembered her mother, how beautiful she was—tall and slender with long flowing blonde hair, and large blue eyes. Gentle, caring and so loving to everyone who knew her.
She patiently waited for them to leave. She was eager to get moving for it was now approaching darkness. Finally, they were gone; she could now take with her what little perishables that were left. She grabbed her doll, a bonnet that didn’t get burnt-up, and some parcels of food from the buckboard of the wagon.
The savages had taken everything: blankets, trunks, horses, even the water was gone. Amber thought of her parents again. Her mom was only twenty-five years old; her father was thirty years old. Amber was the perfect reflection of her mother.
Amber headed out in the same direction that her father told her to go if something were to happen to them. So she set out to resume a life, the dreams of her family. So very afraid, she cried while she walked. She kept telling herself that she must keep going. Surely, someone would find her.
Not far ahead, she came to a clearing. Down in the valley, she could see what looked like a town of sorts. Not knowing what was in store for her yet, she could only imagine. Soon, she knew she would turn twelve years old on October 2, 1891. There was still a month left of summer time. Not trying to think of anything but getting some help and possibly some food to eat. By the time she reached the small town, it was now getting daylight. She was exhausted, weary, and very famished; she could barely keep herself a foot. She would soon reach the first door to a large house. Just as it was about to open, Amber fainted; everything turned to darkness.
Some weeks later, not sure exactly how long she’d been out, Amber awoke. She had no recollection as to where she was. As she looked around the room, she noticed that it was nothing fancy; it looked like a pantry room of sorts.
There were no pictures on the walls, no toiletries, no washing basin. Then she looked at what she had been sleeping on. It was a large trunk. She was now standing in the middle of the small room. She looked around for a window to make her escape from. No,
came a voice from outside the room. There wasn’t any window in the room.
Soon, the door flew open to a fat, little man who greeted her with a huge smile. She politely asked him
