My School Days
To start this book, I thought it would be appropriate to share with you about what it was like when I attended school in the 1960s. When I started elementary school, the same school at which I am currently teaching, it did not have a kindergarten. But there was a day care program that I attended, and my day care teacher taught us our alphabets, etc. Most kids did not attend this program, and they entered school for the first time when they started first grade.
If anyone misbehaved, they were spanked by the teacher in the classroom in front of the students. Since most of my teachers lived in my community and attended my church, if I chose to misbehave, which I didn’t, they would tell my parents. I didn’t want my parents to find out that I misbehaved in school because when I got home, I would also receive a spanking from my parents.
The school’s demographic was 100 percent African American. All of my teachers were African American. No one threw chairs, ran down the hallways yelling, cursed at the teachers, and especially did not hit any teachers. There was a very small percentage of kids who didn’t follow the rules.
