Win or Go Home - Michael Milligan
I was a daydreamer. I did sleep alone as a kid, and I think that prepared me for the problems later. I hardly ever heard lessons in school because of my daydreaming. I did all right in school—Bs and Cs.
I lived in the small town of Rockville, Indiana, where people loved beer, basketball, and farming. It is the Covered Bridge Capital of the World. I thought life was amazing. I had an amazing family and they approved my participation in sports. So that consumed me. Football was my first love, until I got hit a couple of times. I decided it wasn’t for me. So I played less contact sports.
Competition in sports started young. Growing up, I had three close friends I called Earls. We were on a pee-wee basketball league together. I was quite small, so basketball was hard for me, although the adrenaline in basketball was amazing. When I got to high school, I was good enough to start varsity. I conquered something.
The Earls were a clique. The Earls got their name from prank calling people and calling one another Earl.
In junior high school, I started to get rebellious ideas. My mom really noticed. I attributed that to social engineering experiment.
I also got into theatre young. My sister was in plays, and I also was in The Sound of Music as a child. I was the lead in a high school musical.
My dad golfed, so I started that young, too. I learned a lot. There are etiquettes and rules in golf. They teach men how to behave. You can play by yourself. It is also a life-long sport.
Church also shaped me. My family went to church every Sunday. It was a second home. On Sunday nights, we would always have nachos and watch a movie.
Christmas was a special time for the family. And to this day, my parents make me come home for it. Hang with old friends and cousins. Lots of presents!
I have one brother and one sister. I was a groomsman at both of their weddings. My brother’s wedding was at our house. It was outside in the dead of summer. Those are memories no one can take from me.
There was a teacher who played a big role. He worked for the government before teaching at Los Alamos. In 2009, when my life got turned upside down, I turned to him. He acted like he knew all about the weapons.
