    Chapter One

If you drove east down I-10 from Tucson, Arizona, you would pass a little town called Wilcox. There was not much there in the way of shopping. But it did have a few stores. The community was friendly, even though our town was what most folks would call a farming town. We had a truck stop and plenty of restaurants to choose from. In one of these restaurants was where my story began.

The owner was my grandfather, and my grandpa and I opened it in memory of my dad. We called it Richard’s Diner. Both my parents were killed in a car crash in 1999. That was when I came to live with my grandpa. I was eight at the time. I could remember being really sad, and my grandpa gave me a padlock key and told me never to lose it.

Fall in Arizona did not show the seasons changing unless you were in the high mountains. However, everyone knew when it was close, for football season started the coming of school. And before anyone knew it, Halloween arrived, and Thanksgiving was around the corner. In the desert, leaves did not change, and the animals did not hibernate. The mesquite trees were in full bloom, and the snakes were on high alert. You could feel the heated wind slowly slipping into a cool winter breeze. The air became cooler, and the nights were chilled with the humidity in the air.

Now I was sixteen, and I was two weeks away from my seventeenth birthday. My two best friends, Tyler Davis and David Packered, and I hung out as much as we could. In fact, we were going to the game tonight, and afterward, we were going to our junior homecoming dance.

The game didn’t go well for Wilcox, but the dance was fun, and I had a good time. One by one, we dropped our dates at their homes. Then we decided to go looking for a party.

As we drove around, I said, Let’s try the dry lake. There are always parties there.

As we headed for the lake, I could see Tyler looking back into town.

Hey, look at that! I think we are going the wrong way. There is an orange glow coming from W mountain, Tyler said.

Tyler, what are you— I said.

No, look, he is right, Cody. Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s go party! David interrupted my sentence.

So we turned around and headed toward the light to investigate where it was coming from. When we reached the base of the mountain, we all got out. As we were hiking the mountain, I could hear a weird language. Wondering what it was and not wanting to be seen, I pulled David and Tyler behind some mesquite bushes nearby.

To my horror, I saw two creatures around the glow. They appeared to be a globe of some kind that put out an orange light. I watched the globe darken, and the creatures were gone. I let my eyes adjust to the dark. Then I saw standing in the creatures’ wake were Mr. and Mrs. Johnson.

We have to tell someone, I said, scared out of my mind.

I ran as fast as my legs would carry me. When I rounded the last corner, I saw three silhouettes standing next to my car. Not knowing who it was, I slid to a stop and froze. Tyler and David ran into me and almost knocked me down. Unable to move, I watched as the silhouettes came nearer. Upon a closer look, I could see that Mr. Green, Sheriff Walter, and Mr. Johnson were the silhouettes. We walked slowly to the three men. Not knowing if the Sheriff and Mr. Green were monsters too, we stayed silent.

What are you three doing out here this late at night? Sheriff Walters asked.

We were looking for a party someone said was out here tonight, Tyler said.

Well, did you find the party? Mr. Johnson asked with steel in his eyes.

No, we didn’t, I said coolly.

That’s why we were leaving, Tyler added.

We need to get going, guys. My mom will be waiting up for me, David said, his voice trembling.

Sheriff Walters and Mr. Johnson looked at each other and then stepped aside. As we walked past, there came a low growl from Mr. Johnson. Fearing that Mr. Johnson would turn back into the creature again, we climbed into the car as fast as we could without looking back and drove away. No one spoke until we were almost to David’s house. Tyler broke the silence.

Do you think the sheriff was one too?

I…I do not know. But we need to tell someone, I said.

Tell someone? Tell someone! Are you crazy? Who would believe us? Tyler exclaimed.

I just… I could not find the words.

You just thought we could tell someone that we just watched your neighbor turn into a monster? Really, Cody, we would be put in a rubber room, Tyler said

    However— I cut Tyler off.

I get it. We can’t tell anyone! What do we do then? Just pretend it did not happen? No, I do not think so. I know I will never forget.

I pulled up to David’s house and turned off the engine. We all just sat in silence for a while, thinking of something to say that would ease the fear I felt in my heart.

Again, Tyler broke the silence. I think we should not tell anyone and should just try to find out what is going on. What do you think, David?

Why are you asking me? I don’t know what to do, David said in a
