About this ebook

“With not much else to be occupied with, having no movie theater, bowling alley, and only a weekly newspaper, it was the small farming community’s main entertainment, and then all for the most part supported the school. They looked forward to all the young people’s endeavors. There was always something going on, but the real and foremost interest was the games the boys played. Football in the fall, basketball in the winter, baseball in the spring. The young boys were likened to young lords while they played these games.” Excerpt from: Marlynn Groholske. “Once Upon a Kiss”

When coach Boconn bid the faculty and school board farewell, he closed with these words, I have heard some words to the effect that sports should be dropped. At least football because of the poor showing the last two years. Now may I remind you that if our young man students are not given a way to try themselves, who’s a leader, and how to work as a team, they’ll conquer their own trials of leadership and trust, and I guess you all know how these little feats progress.

This was in regards to the time the schoolboys took the car belonging to Mr. Madison, the school principal, up to the roof of the man’s house. This all in one night and no one the wiser.

Whereby the man changed his mind about the tennis courts he planned for the baseball field.

I wish my health had been better the last two years, but now with a new vigorous young man you have in Ed Housar, I’m sure things will improve for our lads. Thank you and farewell, good people.

Nobody was much interested in the new home economics teacher, least of all her third-hour class.

Old Mrs. Fenton retired from teaching altogether, leaving, as she said, the future wives and mothers of Clayton Co. to the Lord above, for she could do no more! The new teacher came bustling into her classroom to see a polite and expectant group of home economics schoolgirls waiting.

Hello, class, my name is Miss Corren Buchard. I’m looking forward to teaching you girls. I’ve had a lot of experience with food safety and nutrition. And teaching collage for the last four years. I’m sure we’ll all learn from each other also.

Miss Buchard turned and wrote her name on the blackboard. The teenage girls took in the woman’s unkempt hair, the run in her stocking, the ripped-out seam in the woman’s sleeve, then to top it off, her slip that was showing. With a few secret looks and a sniff or two, the schoolgirls turned back to their own pursuits. All totally ignoring the new teacher. Katie Parker named the new home economics teacher Miss Buschy, and the name stuck.

Janie Paul came to school with her new short hairdo, the better to show off her new gold earrings in pierced ears no less!

Then of course the other girls wanted pierced ears too!

This was Janie’s last year of high school, and she planned to enjoy herself. The first thing she did was break up with her current boyfriend, Chuck Harris. She liked all the parties and get-togethers but was eyeing Kenneth Wright. Ken didn’t date much, so Janie only saw him in school. She didn’t have any classes with him either, so she was hard put to get his attention. She did promise Chuck she would go with him to the governor’s ball in November, and maybe she would go to the country club for the Republican Mixer also.

Meantime she tried to think her way into Kenny Wright’s heart, while making him think it was his idea, to ask her out. Janie didn’t care for the scholastic aspect of high school but hugely enjoyed the social. Janie’s best friend didn’t care one way or the other about pierced ears, but she decided to make an issue of it at the supper table. She dropped her little bomb on her parents. All the girls are getting pierced ears!

This was heads up for father Burk. Well, you’re not! You, young lady, do not need more holes in your head! Whereby mother Burke sided with her daughter as usual. "Now, Herb. Why can’t Stella get her cars pierced? All the other girls are doing
