    Chapter 1

In 1950 I was on top of the world. I had a beautiful wife, three wonderful kids, a job I loved, and friends, and I was in good health. I was tooling around in my grandfather’s little Ford Coupe. Grandpa, Dad, and I spent some time restoring the little puddle jumper. I never let anyone else drive it and stayed right there with it the few times I had to take it to the garage. Oh! It was my babycakes!

I was vice president of the First Savings Bank of Ludlow, very well run by the president, Bruce Ludlow. We were the only bank in our little town and number two in Webster County. We did a fair amount of business. Bruce had a large family, and he often hired a niece or a nephew. The latest family member he hired was Michele Koler. Believe me, she was a very nice-looking young girl. Well, she was more than pretty! She was a real knockout! Of course she was married, her husband, Jeff Koler, was in the military, and he wanted his wife to be near her family and close to his parents while he was deployed.

Michele was always on time, and she had a smile for everyone. She paid attention to her dress and appearance. Always appropriate for the office. She was also a quick learner and took her job seriously. Michele didn’t trade on her relationship with her uncle either. Soon everyone, coworkers and customers alike started to call her Micky. It got to be an office joke the way every male over sixteen stood in line at Micky’s window. Even tottery old Mr. Bidwell. He started to come in twice a week to deposit two dollars in his savings account.

Then one day old Mrs. Wagnor came into the bank and went to Micky’s window. She wanted to draw out five thousand dollars. The old lady had never made any kind of a withdrawal and five thousand was a lot of money. Micky excused herself to go get some more cash. Then went right to her uncle’s office. They spoke briefly, and Mr. Ludlow came out to the lobby and spoke to Mrs. Wagnor. He invited her to step into his office for a chat. He was sure the old woman was being taken advantage of. Sure enough, a well-known flimflam artist, Bernie Cutlip had convinced Mrs. Wagner there was oil on her farm, and he, Bernie, needed the money to start drilling. The banker refused to let his customer withdraw the money and took it upon himself to call Mrs. Wagnor’s son.

Well, that was a feather in Micky’s cap! All of her coworkers applauded!

September came, the kids went back
