About this ebook

In this book, The Seeker and the Sought, Dwight Samuels has attempted to share with the reader some of his personal spiritual experiences that have transformed his Christian belief system and his beliefs about religions as a whole, coming to the realization that it was far from most of what he had been taught in churches, his worldly experiences surrounding the question of this creation, God, and Jesus Christ as the only son of God. Through his seeking from an early age, he was able to discover many hidden spiritual truths that enlightened his higher consciousness as to who and what God is after finally meeting and being initiated into the “Spiritual Path” or as the Bible refers to it, “The Way” by a Perfect Living Master! This was after realizing that he knew absolutely nothing about most things in life except what he was taught either in school or by his mother which was also very limited and coming to the realization that anything that he really learned he learned through his own experience. Even while in school, you have to practice your ABCs, learn to read and write, or practice math to make it to higher levels of mathematics! Well, guess what? The spiritual path is no different. You cannot just read the Bible, Koran, Vedas, or Torah and expect anything, except your own mental gymnastics of what is being said in them. One has to have a “real spiritual teacher.” It was thirty-seven years ago that the “love and grace of God” was bestowed upon me, and the Perfect Living Master of our time came into my life and initiated me onto the spiritual path, and through real practice, the realizations that he has shown me has confirmed many of the events that Christ describes in the Bible. I pray that you, the reader, has the same opportunity.

    The Author’s Foreword

    When I sat down and decided to begin an attempt to write this book I knew nothing about writing in a professional manner but I was compelled to move forward with it. The experiences that were part of my journey were real and miraculous and I was compelled to share them with you the reader whomever and wherever you may be; and find yourself in life. Know in your search for God that you must in the words of Jesus Christ;

    Seek and Ye Shall Find;

    Knock and the door shall be opened

    Matthew 7:8 Bible

    The true method has been shared with the true seeker in this book. It is known as the Science of The Soul or Surat Shabd Yoga. The Shabd is another name for The Word Spiritual Sound Current The Audible Life Stream The Creative Power The Music of the Spheres The source of all Creation that transports you back to The Supreme Being Himself. There are many intimate experiences that the disciple can and do experience on the Spiritual path that they are generally not allowed to or refrain from discussing with the non initiates because quite frankly they were asked by the Master not to share with those who are not on the path; because 99.9% of people would not believe them and dismiss them as being crazy or out of their minds; also they could lose the experiences that they are having. I remember back in 2010, I was invited to Huzur Ishwarji’s home for dinner with he and his lovely wife Mira. The three of us sat down to a traditional Indian Dinner of Samosa’s rice and lentils, Pakora’s and Kulfi drinks. We laughed and talked of the events of the day. We then went to the living room when Ishwarji excused himself for about 5 minutes. When he returned he had in his hands a plastic bag and inside of it was a Brown Meditation Shawl and a Silver Cup that he then removed from the bag and brought up to his forehead with eyes closed for a moment with deep humility, kissed it and then said to me, this is the prayer shawl of Maharaji Charan Singh, your original Master that initiated you onto the Spiritual Path this life, just as I have done. He said that Maharaji wore this particular shawl to most Satsang’s that he gave; and that it was his favorite one out of all of them that he wore. He then took out a Silver Cup, that he said was given to him by his Master The Great Master" Huzur Maharaj Sawan Singh.

    He then said I want you to have this most precious of gifts; I was stunned and shocked that he was giving it to me, I had to ask him why me, I certainly don’t deserve it! He then said it is Great Master’s Will, who as you know initiated all three of us either this life or the last; that you receive this. Out of ignorance of the magnitude of this gift and great humility, Ishwarji then said please use it when you do your meditation, I replied yes Ishwarji. Being in the company of my Beloved Saint Sat Guru, I knew this was a very special occasion at this very private and sacred moment. Out of ignorance of the great magnitude of these gifts; I accepted the garment with great humility and appreciation; and will always cherish it with the Love, Devotion and the Grace in which it was given. I dedicate this book to my present Beloved Master, best friend, and Sat Guru Ishwar Puri Ji Maharaj for the Love and Grace he has shown and bestowed on me this life and beyond, and the permission to share some of my spiritual experiences with you the reader. Maharaji Charan Singh my first Guru that initiated me on the Spiritual Path this life, whom I did not meet personally. My dear friend The Great Master Huzur Maharaj Sawan Singh ji my Master from my immediate past life in India. To My Fellow Disciples, my Beautiful loving sons Julian and Adam, My Family, Friends, and True Seekers of God. The Spiritual Path leads to higher regions or heavens one more beautiful than the last. You too can experience them. Like my Master said to me; and his to him "Don’t take my word for it, prove it for yourself; Go Within! The Kingdom of Heaven is Within you!

    Chapter 1

    In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the light was the Light of men (John 1:1–2).

    This true story begins on the South Side of Chicago. It was July 1968 when my family and I lived in the projects on 63 RD and Prairie on the 10th Floor Apt 1010. Coincidentally, as you’ll find later in this book, this will have some significance. I was a junior at Englewood High School and played on the football team as a running back. During that time, me and several other young brothers had a singing group that we had formed, and we enjoyed singing in the hallways of the project building due to its great acoustics. I have to say that we were pretty good. We had no formal training, but we loved to sing all of the latest tunes that came out of Motown and Chicago from the Temptations to the Chi-Lites. Our lead singer was a young brother named Jeffrey. He didn’t live in the projects with us, but we met him through a girl he was going out with from there. Jeff was very flamboyant and very confident and could sing his butt off. He was a couple of years older than the four of us and about to graduate from high school. He had a younger brother named Barry who was a member of a gang called The Devils Disciples that still exists today unfortunately; we rarely ever saw Barry unless we went over to Jeff’s house to practice. We would sing around town at the various nightclubs, such as The Green Bunny, High Chaparral, Beal Street, and others for free, trying to make it in the business. One night, we even did a show with the Jackson 5 out of Gary, Indiana, just about thirty minutes from the South Side of Chicago. I think Michael, at that time, was only five years old, and they had just cut their first record I’m A Big Boy Now! They were fantastic even at that young age. That same night, we met a guy named Carl, who said he was a recording manager and used to be with Chess & Brunswick Records, and he thought we had the talent to be signed with a record company. Of course, this sparked our interest because that’s what we all wanted. He told us that Curtis Mayfield of the famous group The Impressions and Eddie Thomas were opening up a new record company on Stony Island Avenue called Curtom Records, and he would like to take us over there for an audition the following day, provided we make him our manager. Of course, being young and ignorant about the business, we agreed.

    The next day, we met at the office on Stony Island and had the opportunity to audition for Eddie Thomas, the president of the company. We started singing, and his eyes lit up like two candles in the night when he heard us sing. When we finished, he immediately pulled a contract out of his desk drawer and asked us to sign it on the spot; we were thrilled and very excited when Carl said, Let me see it.

    He read over it and didn’t like what he saw and told Eddie that we were not going to sign the contract as it stood. He asked us to step out of the office. We could hear the two of them yelling and screaming at each other over it. Finally, he opened up the door, and looking angry and dejected, he said, Come on, boys. We’ll go to Brunswick Records.

    We were shocked! We said, What happened?

    Then Mr. Thomas said, Look, you boys, you can go with this loser or you can sign this contract today and become one of our acts on stage in about a month.

    We didn’t know what to do; we wanted to be loyal to Carl and felt like he knew the business and we didn’t, so we agreed to follow his lead. After all, he brought us to Curtom in such a short time, why not another record company? Carl explained to us that he would set more appointments with Brunswick Records to get us an audition within a few weeks, and we agreed. A couple of weeks passed, and we really were into practicing in the hallways of the projects. One day, Jeffrey came by driving a brand-new dark metallic green convertible Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, with white leather interior; man, was it a beautiful ride! As he and his brother pulled up in the parking lot of the project, everybody flocked to the car in disbelief of how he was able to afford it. He told us that his grandmother bought it for him as a graduation present since he was graduating high school in a month. We were even more amazed that his grandmother had that kind of money. We were mesmerized at the beauty and style of the car. Then Jeff said, C’mon, fellas! Hop in and let’s go celebrate at McDonald’s. It’s my treat.

    So we all piled in! On the way, we sang songs and practiced, as we always did, while the sun shone down our faces that beautiful Saturday afternoon. We were even singing at McDonald’s and had everybody there gathered around us asking for more; it was a wonderful time for six kids from the ghetto who grew up with literally nothing. After enjoying ourselves, Jeff dropped us back off at the projects, and he and Barry were on their way in their brand-new car. The following Friday, Jeff and Barry came back to the project unexpectedly, and I was the only one in our singing group downstairs that day. I asked him if he had come over to practice, and he said no. He and Barry were just cruising the hood, so I said, So take me with you!

    He said, "Nah, we got something to do.

    I said, Okay, cool. Next time then.

    He said, You got it.

    So I thought nothing of it. The next morning, my family and I were sitting and having our morning cereal when a news flash came on TV. Then I heard the announcer say that an off-duty police bar was stuck up last night on South Chicago Avenue. One policeman was killed, and several were wounded. The two assailants were also killed named Jeffrey and Barry Latrell from Chicago’s South Side. I was shocked and couldn’t believe my ears. My entire family and the whole building residents were shocked because we all knew them and just couldn’t imagine them doing something as brazen and horrific as this. Apparently, the night before, when Jeff left me there in the parking lot, he and Barry went on the prowl. looking for places to stick up
