    Chapter 1

An ounce of relief washed over me as the sounds of stampeding feet came past the closet and into the small bathroom connected to the left side of the bedroom. Knowing damn well that this might be my only chance, I jumped out of the closet and bolted down the hallway, internally praying that the main entrance had been left unlocked. My heart rate sped up as I observed that the door appeared to be shut. I didn’t even turn around; I could both hear and feel the heavy footsteps not all that far behind me. For a few seconds, it appeared as though there was no hope to get out of there; however, that was before I heard the noise of boots running along the nearby terrain. There was something about that noise that pretty much propelled me over that fence. My determination to escape caused my adrenaline to pump so hard that I barely remember climbing over it. Before I knew it,
