Chapter 1
An ounce of relief washed over me as the sounds of stampeding feet came past the closet and into the small bathroom connected to the left side of the bedroom. Knowing damn well that this might be my only chance, I jumped out of the closet and bolted down the hallway, internally praying that the main entrance had been left unlocked. My heart rate sped up as I observed that the door appeared to be shut. I didn’t even turn around; I could both hear and feel the heavy footsteps not all that far behind me. When I grabbed hold of the doorknob, I first turned it to the right and pulled; it didn’t open.
No, no, no!
I gasped. But after I turned it to the left, I felt the brisk autumn air caress my cheeks. That brief feeling of hope got squashed when the large hand extended over my left shoulder and slammed the door shut before I could squeeze my way through. Without even a millisecond of hesitation, I wound up my torso and swung the bedframe leg at my abductor’s face just as I would with a bat and a baseball.
Aaaarrrrhhhggg!
the man shouted, immediately gripping the left side of his head as he stumbled a few steps backward. Before I knew it, I was out the door, running past the array of creepy targets, scanning the area for the first available gate within the abnormally high fence. Although I was getting closer to Keith’s main house, I decided to take my chances with being spotted by anyone else who might reside there; with no time to hide, I knew I had no choice other than to rely entirely on my speed.
When I finally arrived at a gate that was off to the side of the main house, I was again disheartened when I noticed a heavy-duty lock securing it. For a few seconds, it appeared as though there was no hope to get out of there; however, that was before I heard the noise of boots running along the nearby terrain. There was something about that noise that pretty much propelled me over that fence. My determination to escape caused my adrenaline to pump so hard that I barely remember climbing over it. Before I knew it,
