From Cavernous to Cozy

Michelle, a golf pro, and Bryan, a physical education teacher and former NCAA volleyball coach, had redecorated the rest of their new suburban home in a contemporary/traditional style, but when they got to the master bedroom, they had to call time out. It was huge—almost big enough for a volleyball court!—and very red. Yet with all that space, the closet was too small for the couple to share. The king-size bed was new, bought in an attempt to fill a large, dark alcove, but the rest of the furniture had been with Michelle since she was a teen. Clearly it was time for a new game plan.

Before: Michelle and Bryan’s bedroom was very red and big enough to host a volleyball tournament. Even buying a king-size bed and floating a seating group in the bay window area couldn’t make it seem less cavernous.

After: Closing off the bed alcove to make a walk-in closet provided a new feature wall with a fireplace that anchors the new lounge area. The window bay becomes a luxurious sleeping zone.
