Della’s basement is capital D
Dated! It is totally stuck in the 1960s, with worn, avocado-green carpet, uneven floors, chopped-up spaces, and miles of paneling. The basement nevertheless sees lots of use for family games, karaoke, air hockey, and even a little homework. But Della and her family are part of a big group of friends who do everything together, including hosting parties on a rotating basis, and Della dreads bringing them to this dark and outdated room. She’d love a chic, contemporary place that can handle everything from dancing and air-hockey tournaments to watching TV and entertaining friends.
9781118276679-fg0101.tifBEFORE: This basement was stuck way back in the 1960s, with tons of paneling, ugly flooring and carpet, and dated furniture. It didn’t matter if kids spilled grape juice on the carpet, but it certainly wasn’t a room to share with anyone outside the immediate family.
9781118276679-fg0102.tifAFTER: Bright creamy paint and new wood-look vinyl flooring instantly update the space. A large, new sectional provides plenty of comfy seating for crowds, with another cozy conversation area centered on the fireplace.
9781118276679-fg0104.tif9781118276679-fg0103.TIFSolution
• I started by organizing this huge space into zones: An entertainment and TV zone takes up the main area; a lounge zone snuggles up to the fireplace; an office/study area gives new function to a cubicle to the right of the fireplace; and an expanded games zone takes over a small storage room to the left of the fireplace.
• To hold demolition to a minimum, I decided to keep the paneling and give it a whole new look with paint. The carpet and flooring had to go, however, and I replaced them with a wood-look vinyl flooring that’s party-practical, hard-wearing, and perfect for covering uneven basement floors.
• The focal point of the new TV zone is a new, built-in big-screen TV with stereo components and speakers, but to make room for it, I had to open up the concrete-block support wall along one side of the room and install a steel beam support. Then I constructed a niche for the custom-built media center cabinetry.
• To create the new games room, I stole a little space from the adjacent laundry room and installed an elegant bar. Now the air-hockey table can move front and center, and there’s storage for all of the board games too.
• The basement badly needed more lighting. I used a combination of recessed and pendant fixtures to spread light around the room and direct attention away from the stucco ceiling.
9781118276679-fg0105.tifA sleek, new wood mantel gives the stone fireplace a more contemporary character, and a pair of modern lamps brings cozy light to this end of the room. A big basement needs large-scale furniture, so I chose four wing chairs upholstered in soft, pumpkin-color leather to create a lounging zone.
9781118276679-fg0106.tifZoning organizes this big space according to function. The new recessed TV anchors the entertainment zone, and a former storage nook now serves as a proper games room, with the air-hockey table holding pride of place.
Style Elements
• The stone fireplace and hearth that extend across one wall had to stay, so I used the stone as the starting point for the color scheme of charcoal, taupe, pumpkin, rust, and
