- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Companion to The Quiet Book. In the same way the soft illustrations helped to make The Quiet Book so beautifully quiet, the same style does not help The Loud Book convey the sounds/feelings of the text.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Children benefit from learning that their are nuances, subtleties, and distinctions to be made. Everything 'loud' is not the same. I liked that sometimes, here, the pages were linked into little tiny stories, for example a set of going to school, a set of going camping. That being said, I prefer the poems that Margaret Wise Brown wrote, often published in Little Golden Books. If you have any of those left, hang onto them! (Or send them to me ;)
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The Loud Book! by Deborah Underwood is the follow up to The Quiet Book. It celebrates and explores all sorts of different loud things: good and bad and in between.Using minimal words and told mostly through the adorable illustrations of animals doing different things over the course of a day, or perhaps a weekend, the book looks at different loud noises. There's the good noise, of a run struck home. And there's the bad noise of that baseball breaking a nearby window. There are fireworks and unexpected burps. It's the sort of book that cries to be read aloud and acted out. By the time I was done reading it, my kids were up and wiggling, jumping and being very silly.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A great book that invites readers to experience the different kinds of loud. An boisterous read full of simple phrases that create a sense of imagery and emotion for the reader.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Author Deborah Underwood and illustrator Renata Liwska, whose first picture-book collaboration, The Quiet Book, made for such an excellent bedtime selection, join forces again in this similarly thoughtful examination of loudness. A simple text, one that is little more than a list of loud things - Crowded Pool Loud, or "Deafening Silence Loud" - is paired with gorgeous artwork done in pencil. The result is an engaging book that grapples with the subtlety of something many children enjoy quite a bit - being LOUD! - while also providing an immensely appealing visual narrative.Like some of my online friends, I think I preferred The Quiet Book to this one, probably because it featured some wintry vistas - this one felt much more like a "summer" book to me, with its outdoor play and poolside scenes - although they are both lots of fun. There isn't much story here, but the artwork is charming enough to carry the reader along, and I did appreciate the subtle lesson on context that is provided, with some sounds being loud, not in and of themselves, but in certain circumstances (such as when wrappers are crinkled in the movie theater). Being a hedgehog/porcupine fan, one of my favorite scenes here was the one in which the startled porcupine has dropped his lunch. All in all, a lovely little book - I look forward to reading the latest from this pair, The Christmas Quiet Book!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Along with the Quiet Book and the Christmas Quiet Book, great book for reading about sounds and thinking about them in different ways. Quiet things can be loud if they're heard in a silent place. Stirs up feelings about sound. Great pictures with animals. Nice read aloud book.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Extremely loud, fun, interactive book. Especially fun for younger kids, great for a class reading, but might get the blood pumping! Not for quiet time
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Underwood illustrates various ideas of loud with plush slightly humanized animals. Some of the most interesting to me were “Burp During Quiet Time Loud” and “Dropping Your Lunch Tray Loud” and “Candy Wrapper (at the movie theater) Loud”.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a terrific compnion to the Quiet Book. While the pictrures are adrable and it is certainly approprate for early readers, this would be very useful as a mentor text for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade writers.
