Sober is Dope - POP Buchanan
About the Author
A person wearing a black shirt Description automatically generatedMy name is POP Buchanan. I am over 10 years sober from alcohol, and I am over 8 years nicotine and cigarette free today. I am also no longer pre-diabetic. I run many successful businesses today, and I am in the best shape of my life. Most importantly, I am alive today. I am no longer depressed, sad, lonely, and angry. I am in a loving relationship, and my life is spiritually, psychologically, physically, and emotionally in alignment. I owe this all to God Almighty. I also owe this to my Recovery.
My mission is to spread the power of transformation. Life is about changing, and that can be a positive life transformation or a negative life transformation. One way or another, we will all change. I knew deep down in my heart that this change would have to start in the heart and mind. I had to believe in the possibility of transformation and healing. As an alcoholic, I managed to destroy my life and my health. I did not think that I could be redeemed. I did not have any hope that I could turn it all around. My life was beyond unmanageable. My heart was broken, and my will to live was also breaking.
Luckily for me, I had an ounce of power left and one big Hail Mary to throw at the Universe. I decided that I wanted and deserved to live. I started to remember that I was worthy, valuable, and blessed. Looking back on that winter day in New York City, I decided to get on my knees in the street and pray to God. I surrendered my entire will to God as I knew him. I was already powerless over my addiction. The first step to taking back this power was by surrendering my will to a higher power. My first step was Day One
of my Sober is Dope
Journey. Although I was born on September 29, 1979, I was born again on December 15, 2012.
My life is one big miracle. I am a walking Testimony of Redemption, Forgiveness, and Second Chances.
My recovery is ongoing, and my treatment is multifaceted. After praying to God on that New York City street, I sought treatment. I went to the hospital and then started my 3-day detox. After my magical 3-day detox, I spent the next year in outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation. I lived in a 3/4 house or shelter, under medical supervision, and spent every day in therapy, counseling, group, talk therapy, psychotherapy, bereavement counseling, and physical therapy. I had an all in
approach to my recovery. I knew that this was my chance to be permanently transformed forever. My one shot at getting it right, fixing my life, healing the trauma of addiction, and setting the record straight. I needed every tool allotted to me. I needed resources.
My success in recovery and sobriety took years of devotion and self-reflection. In addition to the therapies above, I used prayer as my foundation. God gave me the power to start over, and I knew God would be my sacred companion on this journey. I made God a promise that I would remain sober for the rest of my days. I never looked back and never doubted or rejected my divine blessing. Prayer became my foundational therapy. In addition to prayer, I used meditation to help with my anxiety, stress, fear, and mental health. Meditation is vital to my health, clarity, and nervous system. Exercising was also very important to my recovery. To help myself in this transformation, I changed my diet, mindset, thoughts, and beliefs.
Today I am a new human being, and my mind, body, and spirit are one. I have no physical signs that I ever suffered from alcoholism. I am now the proud founder, and host of the Sober is Dope
Podcast.
I am now a podcaster, a life coach, a lyricist, and a businessman. I show up now with less pain, anxiety, and apprehension. I embrace life and challenge myself to keep growing. I want to share my process with you. I also want to share the tools that I use to find success in my recovery and life with you. Remember, we are what we think. Our thoughts affect our internal environment, and if we do not believe we are worthy, then we will not be able to find peace. It all starts with you. It all starts with what you think about yourself.
I had to stop the negative self-talk, negative mind chatter, thoughts of fear, unworthiness, doubt, lack, pity, hate, sadness, jealousy, envy, malice, and self-sabotage. These thoughts and behaviors are toxic and lead to toxic behavior. I replaced these negative things with positive self-talk, positive mind chatter, thoughts of courage, worthiness, strength, abundance, grace, love, peace, happiness, and truth. I stopped feeding them lies, and so I came to believe.
I had to reprogram my subconscious mind to encourage it to believe certain things about myself and about the world and my place within it. Such is the process of using Affirmations.
Affirmations help us to create the reality we want—often in terms of making (or attracting) wealth, love, beauty, sobriety, and happiness. In addition to using positive affirmations to remove the negative beliefs, I used prayer, meditation, and life transformation tips.
This handbook is Part One of a series of resources I am creating to act as guides and companions on your journey of life and recovery. We are all recovering from something. I am recovering from alcoholism, overeating, nicotine, fear, depression, bereavement issues (father’s death), and mental health issues. What are you recovering from today? I hope you find these prayers, meditative-affirmations, and tips helpful on your journey. Remember, it is all about your personal transformation. Please enjoy this work of love. I am your main man POP Buchanan. I love you all, and I will catch you on the other side.
It’s never too late to be amazing!
