    THE BATTLE BEGINS

    At last the day had come when the great crusade for control of the land would be fought. Suddenly, as if carried on the wind, came the sounds and howls of the hosts approaching the city. Terror began to grip their chests as they remembered the men of Adarte who had died at the hands of this same army. Then, after an excruciating wait, thousands upon thousands of feet began to shake the earth from afar. Suddenly, from all the walls of the city they began to see that the light sand, typical of a city settled on the coasts, began to darken as if the grains of sand had turned into charcoal clasts. Surely an army of that magnitude would never stop its march until it had destroyed its target. A shadow grew with terrible rapidity, covering the city's surroundings! Black clouds covered the sky. This time, the paths leading to the silver castle were no longer lonely. The echo of thousands of voices and terrified screams resounded louder and louder against the obsidian stone walls. Thousands upon thousands of torches burned smoky, completely changing the look of a bright, sunny day on a coastal horizon. The day had aged so suddenly and inexplicably that no one in the city could help but be intimidated by the shadow of death. Now they were facing a dark and windy night, with no stars shining in the heavens as if the celestial powers were shrouded in thick clouds. Suddenly, thunder began to roar and rumble in the mountains and flashed on the peaks. Then, below the thunder flashing in the distance, another darkness could be seen, coming forward in a swirl, but this darkness did not come with the blizzard; it came from the north, like a vast cloud of soot so dense that the beams of light could not penetrate it.

    ---Prepare yourselves! --- shouted King Uriel, who raised his arms to the sky. ---- ---Flechers to your positions! --- said in a voice of thunder. ---- Terror has fallen upon the earth! Day of darkness and gloom, day of cloud and shadow; as the dawn spreads over the mountains, so a great and strong people has come; the like of it there never was, nor after it will be in the years of many generations! ---.

    However, when Aslan saw them, he shouted loudly and said:

    ---It is daimonions who have decided to lead the battle! The hosts of Achan, whose father, O Akiva, thou didst humiliate not many moons ago, have come; behold, the ravens hover over the army like a cloud of locusts. The ravens are hovering over the army like a cloud of locusts; they ride goats and bulls, and if we defeat them the Nephilim and the Anakites will come after them like an auroral curtain!

    Astonishment and fear fell upon all the inhabitants of the city. Soon they could see the whole land obscured by a rushing crowd. Then the vanguard retreated and swirled round the edges, to make way for a crowd that rushed in. These were the swiftest horsemen, riding on Bashan and Buffalo bulls, and already the shouts and moos rent the air. The flecheros, shaken by an involuntary reflex, stopped and gazed at the sky. The watchmen shouted with many voices in terror.

    ---Wait! -- -- called Otoniel. --- There is time to hold council. Let us gather together for the enemy has first sent the beings who cannot be defeated with deadly weapons! Come Ishmael, tell us upon what counsel of God we must rest to face this bloody battle !

    The survivors of that battle recounted that the wise man summoned by Otoniel told them a great story that closely resembled their present circumstances. And according to the old stories, this is what they all heard on that day:

    After this, the armies of the Moabites and the Ammonites and some of the Meunites declared war on Jehoshaphat.  Messengers came and reported to Jehoshaphat, A huge army of Edom is marching against you from beyond the Dead Sea; it is already at Hazezon-tamar. (This was another name for En-gadi).

    Jehoshaphat was terrified by the news and begged the Lord for guidance. He also commanded everyone in Judah to fast. So the inhabitants of all the cities of Judah went to Jerusalem to seek the Lord's help.

    Jehoshaphat stood before the community of Judah in Jerusalem, in front of the new court of the temple of the Lord, and prayed, saying: O Lord, God of our ancestors, you alone are the God who is in heaven. You are the ruler of all the kingdoms of the earth. You are strong and mighty; no one can stand before you! O our God, did you not drive out those who lived in this land when your people Israel came, and did you not give this land forever to the descendants of your friend Abraham? Your people settled here and built this temple to honour your name. They said, When we face any calamity, whether war, plague or famine, we can come to this place to stand in your presence before this temple where your name is honoured. We may cry out to you to save us, and you will hear us and rescue us".

    "Now look what the armies of Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir are doing. You did not allow our ancestors to invade those nations when Israel came out of Egypt, so they surrounded them and did not destroy them. See how they repay us now, for they have come to drive us out of your land, which you gave us as an inheritance! O our God, will you not stop them? We are powerless before this mighty army that is about to attack us. We do not know what to do, but we look to you for help.

    While all the men of Judah were standing before the Lord along with their wives, their children, and even the little children, the Spirit of the Lord came upon one of the men there. His name was Jahaziel, son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite, who was a descendant of Asaph.

    He said, "Listen, inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem, listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the Lord says: 'Do not be afraid! Do not be discouraged by this mighty army, for the battle is not yours, but God's. Tomorrow, march against them. Tomorrow, march against them. You will meet them going up the slope of Sis at the end of the valley that leads to the desert of Jeruel. However, you will not even have to fight. Take your positions; then stand still and watch the victory of the Lord. He is with you, O people of Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged; go out against them tomorrow, for the LORD is with you.

    Then King Jehoshaphat bowed down with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem bowed down with their faces to the ground in worship of the Lord. Then the Levites of the clans of Kohath and Korah stood up to praise the Lord, the God of Israel, with a loud voice.

    Early the next morning, the army of Judah set out for the wilderness of Tekoa. On the way, King Jehoshaphat stopped and said, "Listen to me, you inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem! Believe in the Lord your God and you will be able to stand firm. Believe your prophets and you will succeed.

    After consulting with the people, the king appointed singers to walk before the army, singing to the Lord and praising him for his holy splendour. This is what they sang:

    "Give thanks to the Lord;

        his faithful love endures for ever!".

    When they began to sing and give praise, the Lord caused the armies of Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir to begin fighting each other. The armies of Moab and Ammon turned against their allies on Mount Seir and killed every one of
