Understanding the Statistics, Support and Advice Available
Single motherhood continues to be a rapidly growing reality for many women today. According to US census data released in 2018, one-quarter of all households with children under the age of 18 are now headed by single mothers. The realities of single motherhood can be challenging, emotionally and financially. As such, it is important for all members of society to understand and provide support and advice when needed. The e-book that follows will examine the most recent data, support systems, and suggestions for single mothers while assisting in the education of readers and the dismantling of stereotypes surrounding the situation.
Statistics Regarding Single Motherhood
Data compiled by Pew Research Center indicates that in 2017, 72% of single-parent households were headed by moms. Of this 72%, 42% were recent divorcées; 32% had never been married; and 27% were separated or widowed. Furthermore, according to a 2018 National Census Bureau report, forty percent (40%) of American households headed by a single parent live below the poverty line, and single mothers earn 73% less than their male counterparts each year in wage earnings alone. It is also important to note that around 59% of black mothers are single parents as compared to 24 % white/other mothers. Finally, almost half of these women continue working full time as their primary source of household income with very few receiving any financial
