About this ebook
Yuck.
My mother set everything in motion with that one word. This is all her fault. What started as a dare—courtesy of our friends Alphonse and Uma—has left me reeling. Mom saw pictures of me with my best friend Danny. She took one look at the photos and posted that nasty comment. All because Danny is a lesbian. But our friends have a dare that'll get back at my bigoted mother. Trouble is, I'm the one whose heart is on the line.
This blasted dare will be the death of me. Pretend to date Reita—my best friend and the woman I've desired for years? How can I smile and go along with something like this when my heart is pounding and I can't stop staring at her lips? What would the forbidden fruit of my best friend taste like? To prove the bet, we have to post a picture of a passionate kiss. Can I get one taste and walk away once the bet is won?

Chapter One - Reita
Yuck.
I stare at the word posted on my picture with Danny. My heart plummets and my stomach churns. What will Danny think when she sees this? I’d thought I was finally making progress, finally bonding with my mother, finally breaking in to discover the woman behind the image she portrays.
But I was wrong. Only a couple months ago my mother was posting sweet messages like, You guys are so cute together! Or I’m so happy you two found each other! And every message would be riddled with heart emojis. But that was when I’d posted pictures with Gary. Gary the man who would call when I was with friends and would ask me to have my friends all speak so he could confirm none of them were men. Gary who would scowl at me when I appeared too friendly with male waiters. The man who demanded I never spend alone time with Alphonse despite that he has been part of my best friend group since we were all in diapers.
Mother waved it off that it meant he truly cared about me. She said he must have been cheated on in the past and it was my job to prove it him that he can trust again, that he can trust me, with time.
Fuck that noise. Dump that sorry sack of shit.
Danny’s words still fill me with confidence in my decision. The breakup was the easy part. The fallout with mom has been a nightmare.
I flip through the pictures of Danny and I at the park last weekend. Our trip to the U-Pick Strawberry Field. Every picture, "Yuck", tainting the image. I toss my phone on the counter and let the hot water of the shower work at the tension building in my neck and shoulders.
The hot water begins to run cold. I twist the cold nozzle fully off until the meager remaining hot water blasts me for a few more seconds before petering out entirely. The moment I step out of the shower, banging reverberates through my apartment.
Ugh,
is all I can muster. Is it mother, here to berate me for things she can only guess about? Is it Gary here to accept my mother’s apology on my behalf? The impatient banging thankfully ceases after the third round. I’m sure I’ll have plenty of hate-filled voicemails if I flip my phone over. But as I stare at its vibrant rainbow case—a gift from Danny—I can’t help but feel the urge to knock the phone to the floor so I can watch the screen fracture into a million tiny pieces.
Where you at, sleeping beauty? Have you heard the good word?
The shout from somewhere on the other side of my apartment has me screeching and covering myself with one hand as I fumble for the towel rack with the other.
Is that you in there screeching so early this morning?
Ugh,
is all I offer her.
Is that anyway to greet your honey bunny?
Danny giggles outside the bathroom door.
I thought you were Gary for a second. I take it that means you saw?
Danny harrumphs in answer. I can picture her plopping onto my bed and sprawling out among my unmade covers. When I kick open the door, she’s laid out exactly as I’d imagined but with a carrier of coffees propped on the corner of my bed.
The half hot cocoa and half coffee heats my blood. Danny glances at me then looks away as I rummage through my drawers in search of clothes. A glance at the clock on my dresser proves my fears, Danny is over an hour early and will now pester me to hurry my morning routine.
The towel drops around my feet. To my right, my vanity mirror perfectly captures Danny as her eyes flick between me and the coffee in her hand. I peek at her and watch as she fidgets, trying not to make it obvious that she’s looking at me. When her gaze lingers as I pretend to search for a thong,
