    Chapter One – Ashaya

Ideserve this. I deserve every terrible thing that’s happened to me. I’ve been stupid and willfully blind and ignored everyone’s pleas that I stop.

Are you sure I can’t get you anything to drink? It’s no trouble at all. The beautiful woman reassures me with a smile of celebrity-white teeth. They’re so white they’re almost blue. Her hair is white-blonde. She reminds me of that white-haired superhero, Mirage, in that movie The Incredibles 2. I shrink into my oversized clothes and shake my head.

What? Oh, no, thank you so much. But truly, I am fine. The Mirage lookalike stares one second too long and my put-on formality has my shoulders slumping with embarrassment. What’s the point of being formal here? I’m scum, utter trash. I might as well have worn rags from the dumpster. I don’t deserve to wear this thrifted pantsuit.

August will see you now. I rise with false confidence as the secretary waves a hand toward the door. Go on in, Mrs. Davis. At the slipup of my name, I trip over my own feet.

I catch myself against the door with a loud thud of my head versus hardwood. I’m fine, I’m fine. I reassure her as she jumps from her chair to help me. My face burns in humiliation. That poor old man must be inside finishing up a phone call and I just announced my impending entrance in the worst way possible.

The door handle twists in my grasp and is ripped from my hand. The unexpected opening of the door has me stumbling into a brightly lit office. The floor gives me a harsh greeting as I plummet to the feet of whoever opened the door for me.

Sorry, I’m so sorry. My voice cracks as I desperately try to keep myself in check.

I was just finishing up, no reason to bang so loud on the door. A woman’s voice jeers down at me. I deserve this, too. I knew I’d have to prostrate before my lawyer, I just didn’t think it would be literally.

Thank you, Tabitha, that’ll be all. Please, leave...me to my new client. A deep voice has the woman towering before me tsking before stomping around me. Without raising my head, my eyes follow her designer pumps out the door.

The owner of the deep voice kneels in front of me. I blink through the bright evening sun streaming in the window behind him. I’m sorry about that, Mrs. Davis. Are you all— Appalled by the face I make, his friendly features morph. But then his face gets blurry from my rising tears.

Strong hands pull me upright. A strange sound reaches my ears as I’m led to a leather chesterfield sofa. The lawyer pushes a box of tissues into my hand and only then do I realize the strange braying sound is coming from me. Oh God, I feel so stupid.

Please don’t cry, Mrs. Davis. I know filing bankruptcy is a hard decision, but I promise to make it as painless as possible. A hand covers my knee for a split second before rearing back.

He said it, too. Mrs. Davis. I’m such an idiot! I hunch toward his chest and burrow there like the worthless shit I am. A child desperate for the comfort of a stranger. The lawyer jumps in surprise then wraps an arm behind my back and rubs in a stiff circular pattern.

The man says nothing as my uncontrollable sobs have their way with me. When I’ve exhausted myself with my pity party and my tears have finally ceased, I become aware of the
