~~~~~ PG Excerpt ~~~~~
“The girls are at their father’s place,” Elena said, taking a step toward him. “They won’t be back until tomorrow afternoon. I’ll be all alone. I’ve got this nice big house. With a nice big master bedroom. And a nice big bed. And it would be very...nice...if I had a nice big man to share it with tonight.”
Half-witty quips raced through Steve’s mind. Things like, How do you know I’m big? Do you have a camera in the men’s room at the office? Or, You sure say nice a lot, and most idiotically, I hope all of my reunions end up like this!
But he took one look at Elena, and all his stupid jokes vanished. For Elena, this night had been about slaying dragons. The invisible ones. The ones that climbed into your head and whispered to you in the dead of night, sniggering at decades-old failures until you wanted to stuff your pillow in your mouth and scream. Elena probably hadn’t been asked on a lot of dates when she was at her snooty-ass prep school. He could imagine her at a dance – standing by the wall, a desperate, hopeful smile on her face, as other students walked by and mocked her borrowed dress.
She could have chosen anyone. There were plenty of single men her age at the party. You saw the looks she was getting. But instead of calling an Uber, she went home with you.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded. In the dim light, her eyes were dilated. Fear? Excitement? Arousal?
Steve reached for her hand. Her fingers were warm. “I guess it’s a good thing I took it easy on the booze, huh?”
Elena laughed softly, breaking the tension. “One of the perks of being the designated driver.”
“Are you...”
“No.” She shook her head. “I’m not drunk. I’m just horny.”
“Oh.” He allowed her to lead him into the house. “Maybe we should do something about that.”
Her dark smile glimmered. “Maybe we should.” She paused in the entryway, toeing off her heels. Steve followed her example, kicking off his uncomfortable dress shoes. “Ah.” She lifted onto her toes. “That feels good. And this,” she added, turning until they were practically chest-to-chest. “Is even better.”
Her hands rubbed his back through his sports jacket. “You feel nice.” Her nose nuzzled the crook of his neck. “And you smell nice, too. I wonder how you taste?”
    Chapter One
    Mail, Miss Mendoza.
    Elena smiled at her intern. You know, Steve, you’ve been working for me for three months now. You can call me by my first name.
    The tall young man shook his head. No way. If my mother found out I was calling my boss by her first name, there would be a contest to see who got to keep my ears as a trophy. Her? Or my sisters? He handed over the small stack of envelopes. Here you go.
    Elena flipped through the pile with a smile, flicking junk mail into the recycling bin in one corner of her office. At least we’re keeping the post office busy.
    Her fingers paused. Crap.
    What?
    Elena held up a cream-colored envelope. Her name and address were written on it in black ink – stark swirls against the pale paper. They found me, she said, her voice hollow. I don’t know how, but thy found me.
    Who?
    She pointed a quavering finger at the envelope. Who do you think? The Libyans!
    Steve stared at Elena blankly. She sighed. No one knows the classics anymore. Prep school reunion. I’ll bet you diamonds to dust bunnies. She slit the envelope and pulled out a deckled piece of paper. Her eyes scanned the lines. "Claro. Just what I thought."
    She grimaced as she read. ‘Join us for a celebration of the twentieth anniversary of St. Mark’s Educational, Growth, and Mentorship Academy’s graduating class of two thousand and three.’ Her eyes ran down the fancy calligraphy, finding the date, barely a month away. ‘Please RSVP, blah blah blah blah blah.
    Well, she said, folding the invitation and putting it aside, I guess it wouldn’t have been too hard to find out where I worked. A simple internet search would probably do the job, considering how high she had climbed in the last few years. Though she had scrubbed her social media presence years ago.
    Elena cocked a brow up at Steve. "Something wrong?
    Twentieth reunion? he asked.
    She smiled, lips wry. So do I look younger than I should? Or older?
    Steve blushed, and Elena was reminded she hadn’t hired the recent college grad just for his sparkling resume, even though her interest in his striking good looks was more aesthetic than prurient. She wasn’t about to risk her career with a sexual harassment suit, no matter how tempting the target.
    I just can’t believe you’re… His fingers twitched against his slacks. Thirty-eight?
    Seven, she corrected. I skipped a year in grade school. Which hadn’t endeared Elena to her classmates at St. Mark’s.
    Not that anything could.
    Steve seemed to read something in her expression. My high-school class had our five-year reunion last summer, he offered. It was nice. Some of us went out after for beer and pizza. It was kind of like being with the old gang again. He laughed. Though none of us were able to buy alcohol back in high school, of course.
    Back with the old gang. That’s what I’m afraid of.
    She handed the invitation back to Steve. Hang onto that until I make up my mind. She flicked her fingers in a dismissive fashion and turned back to her computer monitor. Her free hand was already reaching for her headset. I have a call I need to get on, she said. I’ll talk to you later.
    I don’t want to go, Elena thought as she took the train home that evening. She stared out the window as the Chicago suburbs slid by, her lips thinning in old, remembered pain. I hated that place then and I hate
