The Scarf

Madeline Russo leaned against a department store window, face pressed against the glass, gawking at a maroon neck scarf. It was brilliant. Just brilliant.

She had some money saved up, certainly not enough to afford the scarf and three full meals for the next two days. That’s how expensive it was. Was it too expensive though? Not at all. Once she had it, it would be priceless.

She reached for her credit card inside her wallet and brushed it gently. Next time, baby. And she was off.

She hadn’t walked half a mile before her phone notified her that her wages had been credited to her bank account. Along with the Christmas bonus. Madeline hopped and skipped in place and ran back towards the store.

Will that be all, miss? the cashier lady asked.

Um, said Madeline. Actually, let me browse around a little more. Can I wear the scarf?

It’s yours now!

Madeline let out an innocent shriek as the cashier handed it to her. She wrapped it around her neck and began browsing.

This was a posh store. Nothing here was even remotely cheap. Madeline walked around a few glass showcases holding pieces of jewelry. There was one necklace that equaled three times her yearly pay. Madeline gulped and turned around to leave.

What do you mean it was sold? a young man in a thick black overcoat and expensive-looking shades bellowed at the cashier. My secretary specifically requested that you hold it.

And I specifically, and respectfully, informed her that that was against our store policy. We cannot decline a present customer. And we don’t accept reservations or hold onto the merchandise.

What kind of a dumb policy decision is that?

First come first served, sir. It’s a classic.

The man glared at her, furious. He couldn’t believe that it was gone. It was never the case – never – that when he wanted something, he did not get it.

Madeline wasn’t entirely sure what to do next. The scarf that this boiling man wanted so bad was wrapped around her neck. It wasn’t like he wouldn’t recognize it. She decided to act casual and slowly walk around him before bolting for the exit.

It was the perfect plan, until –

You! The man was pointing a thick finger in her general direction.

Me? Madeline gestured and turned around, to see whether he was pointing at someone behind her. There was nothing behind her, except an empty wall.

Yes, you! the man repeated.

Sir, that scarf has been sold to her, the cashier declared firmly.

I know. I know, he said and sniffed the air. He then took his hands off the cashier’s table and started walking menacingly toward Madeline.

Sir… the cashier began again.

I heard you the first time! said the man. Boy, was he having a bad day.

The young lady here now owns the scarf, he continued. "I’m just wanting to see if she would indulge me
