Attack of the Kraken - James Fielding

    1

The Old Man and the Sea

It felt like she was wrestling with a monster! The fishing rod bent and strained against the struggling beast attached to the other end. Warm ocean water sprayed up from the side of the small wooden fishing boat, splashing her face. The salt stung her dry, cracked lips.

At least the day was nice, the girl thought. The late morning sun shone brightly, as white, fluffy clouds jostled for position against the beautiful blue backdrop of the sky.

Hang on! Let a little line out. Keep your back straight. Watch the rod!

Isabella rolled her eyes. Dad’s advice wasn’t helpful, but she knew he meant well.

I know, Dad. I’m trying. I’ve never fought a fish this big!

Okay, Bella, you’re doin’ great. He’s almost in. I think I can see it.

A large, dark shape was slowly emerging from the depths. This was the biggest fish she had ever seen. Wait a minute! Was that a tentacle? Do fish have tentacles!?

    Uh, Dad?

    Yeah?

    I don’t think this is a fish.

Whatever the monster was, clearly it wasn’t a fish. Isabella’s rod began to crack under the intense pressure as the shadowy shape moved underneath the boat. The boat rocked. Something was bumping and scraping the bottom.

What’s it doing!? Isabella gripped the severely bent rod with all her might. Her hands hurt, but she knew she had to hold on. She couldn’t let this one get away. Fish or not, they hadn’t caught anything in days, and time was running out. Money didn’t grow on trees. It swam in the ocean!

It’s trying to tip the boat! Dad yelled back. We have to cut it loose.

We need this, Dad! I’m not letting it go. Her grumbling stomach was issuing instructions, much like a backseat driver.

Isabella’s dad reached into a brown leather pouch attached to his belt and pulled out a rusty pocketknife. I’m cuttin’ the line. I’m not risking your life to bring whatever this is in.

The boat rocked hard as the creature pounded from below. Water began seeping in through the floorboards as cracks formed. The rod was bent so much that it looked like it was about to snap.

This was their last fishing rod. With no fish in days and no money, Isabella knew they couldn’t afford to lose it. She had to bring the beast in fast, or they’d risk losing the boat too.

CRASH! Another hard bump from below. The cracks in the floorboards were getting bigger. Water began pouring in at an alarming rate. Whatever was below them was trying to sink the boat.

A slimy purple tentacle slithered its way out of the water and into the boat. It wriggled around, searching, sensing, as though it was looking for something. Another tentacle appeared over the side. This one was slithering toward Isabella. It found her bare foot, as if this was its target. Isabella flinched from the touch of the monster’s cool, sticky tentacle. It snaked up her leg.

Her father stumbled toward her, knife in hand.

BANG! The boat rocked as the monster struck again. Grabbing the fishing line with one hand, he steadied himself so he could make the cut, severing the line and releasing the angered beast.

Meanwhile, Isabella was still dealing with the monster’s tentacle. It had curled up to her face, leaving a slimy trail in its path. A sharp claw inside a sticky
