Introduction
You’ve probably driven by and seen some people playing a game that looks similar to tennis, but it uses paddles and rackets.
What you saw is probably Pickleball, which has a lot of the same elements that sports such as tennis do, and it uses a lot of the same aspects that the other racket sports have.
The cool thing about Pickleball is that it doesn’t take much to start, and it’s become super popular in a lot of community centers, health clubs, facilities, and even communities for retirees. With thousands of different tournaments all throughout the US, including a US Open Pickleball Championship, and a major league called the Major League Pickleball, this is a sport that’s gotten some traction for a good reason.
Maybe you’ve thought about trying the sport but have no idea where to begin. You’re not alone, plenty of us see the sport and are confused about where to start. That’s why we’ve got you covered.
In this book, you’ll learn all the basics of Pickleball, including why this sport is one of the most popular of the racket and paddle sports, and some basics that are worth mentioning.
It’s a great one to get moving and to get in shape, and it’s one that’s become more popular than ever before.
Chapter 1
All About Pickleball!
Pickleball is something that is interesting and intriguing and also has a rich history, too. Here, we’ll go over just what it is, and also what it means to play Pickleball, including the history behind how it came to be.
The Origin
The game was founded in 1965 in Bainbridge Island, Washington. The man behind it was Joel Pritchard, who would become the lieutenant governor for Washington later on. Basically, Pritchard and two of his friends were spending time together one day when they created this game and created the rules.
The origin of the name seems a bit strange, but Pritchard says the name came from when he said it, because the game reminded him of a pickle boat, where the oarsmen would be chosen from the rest of the crew.
However, some people say that it comes from the dog, Pickles, that the Pritchard family had. The dog was one that came into their lives already named, and some say that the dog was what inspired them to play the game.
However, the Pritchards decided that the best attribution would be to the dog, than trying to explain a pickle boat to someone. But some research states that Pickles was already born once the game was named.
Once the game was invented, some of the founders decided to bring it to Hawaii, where it became known as pukaball, instead of Pickleball, which refers to the ball that was used, since Pickleballs had holes in them, and puka basically means hole
in the Hawaiian language.
The name came about while the guys were sitting about doing nothing after a game of golf. The property they were on had a court that was used for badminton, so they decided to take the badminton equipment there. However, they couldn’t find any rackets, so they took some ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball, and that’s when it came to be.
Once they did this, they put the badminton net up, and they lowered it a little bit so that they could hit the ball over, and the weekend after, they made rules, which were heavily based on badminton, while also creating something original that they could play with their family as well.
The History
Once it was first established, that’s when everything else came about. By 1967, the first Pickleball court was made, and this was of course, in the backyard where Joel and Bob O’Brian, his neighbor, played it.
Shortly after, in 1972, a corporation was made by Bob, Joel and others, in order to create this sport, preserving it by offering a series of specific rules.
Then, by 1975, there was an article published by The National Observer, which discussed Pickleball, and then shortly thereafter in 1976, a tennis magazine published an article on this sport, calling it America’s Newest Racquet Sport.
Speaking of 1976, during this year, the first Pickleball tournament that was known throughout the world was created, and it was held in Tukwila, Washington at the South Center Athletic Club. The winner of it was David Lester in the men’s singles, and Steve Paranto was second place. Most of the players were college kids who played tennis, but actually knew quite little about the sport of Pickleball, using softball-sized balls for the sport, and large paddles made of wood instead of the typical paddles that were ping-pong sized.
The official rulebook came out in 1978, called The Other Racquet Sports
