Even knowing that my sister was lagging behind me, slowing down wasn’t an option. It wasn’t like Ellie couldn’t keep pace if she pushed herself, and I wasn’t going to handicap my exercise because she was being lazy. I stretched out my legs, pounding my feet into the pavement and lifting my nose into the rushing wind.
The weather was perfect for running, still early enough that the sun wasn’t directly overhead, with a gentle breeze and cloud cover. The member’s only park was run by a witch coven, and they did an excellent job at maintaining the running trail and the park grounds. It was my favorite place to exercise, especially in the spring when the flowers were blooming. This late in the year, the grass was turning dull and the trees had mostly lost their leaves, but it was beautiful in a different type of way.
Ellie’s footsteps were getting softer, so I turned, finally slowing to run backwards.
My older sister was softer than me, her body more used to academic study than the sports I enjoyed. Her long auburn hair was pulled back in a braid, and her pale cheeks were flushed.
You’re going to get fat if you keep slacking like this,
I called, unable to stop my grin. My own blonde curls were in a high ponytail and flying around my face.
Maybe you should stop making cookies.
Her sentence was interrupted by gasps of air.
We both know that we don’t want that,
I teased, winking at her and laughing.
She shook her head, and put her head down, asking her body to keep pace. I turned back around, my gait smooth as I fell into my normal step. I didn’t push myself quite as hard. Knowing how much Ellie was hating me right now was more than enough of a reward.
The parking lot was ahead, and I made Ellie sprint the last two-hundred feet with me. By the time we reached the car, she was breathing heavily and doubled over. I grabbed our water from the trunk and passed one to her. My little blue car wasn’t fancy, but it was paid for, and I leaned gratefully on the side as I took a drink.
The cool air rushed into my lungs, steading my heartbeat. I was only slightly winded, and I bit the inside of my lip as Ellie collapsed onto the car beside me. Running was the only thing I did better than my older sister. With a well-paying job and a brilliant mind, Ellie was light-years ahead of me in life, but for some reason, she still made time for me. I didn’t understand why she didn’t find a boyfriend, but instead had insisted on buying a house with me.
Well, she bought the house. I paid rent and utilities.
I poked at her stomach, my finger pushing into the slick gray fabric of her tank-top.
Hey!
She pulled away, spilling water on her chin.
"Yup,
