Is Writing Your Choice, Addiction or a Hustle?

Some of us treat writing like a side-hustle. We write a bit here, we write a bit there, on websites, blogs to earn some money. We try to publish our work everywhere, in the hope that the time will come when we can earn a living from our writing. However, the sad truth is that we can only earn a living from writing if we are employed in the literary field, as a reporter, author, journalist or writer.

A few of us choose to write, when we get a bit of inspiration during the day. We do not put our minds and emotions under too much stress. We publish what we want, where we want and when we want depending on the way we feel on a particular day. There is no burning compulsion to publish our work.

There are a number of us, who must write and publish every day of the year. We do not write for the money it brings in, which maybe just a pittance as no publishing platform is ready or capable of sustaining writers with full time incomes.

The fourth category of writers write to gain followers, readers with the follow for follow tactic, so that they can increase their monthly earnings. A few of these writers use article spinners to generate articles by the dozen so that they can rise in the ranks to become Top writers. Unfortunately, readers soon tire of their emotionless content, which is generated artificially.

Is writing your choice to do when you are in the mood, or is it an addiction that you enjoy or do you like it as a side hustle? Whatever, your choice it is your decision. The important element to bear in mind is that you are keeping some time aside from your busy every day schedule to write. The world definitely needs more writers. The pen is truly mightier than the sword!

A Brand-New Way- To start every day

When life gets slow , boring, and dull,

Every day seems like the day before,

Start things in a brand-new way.

This will surely brighten your day.

If you like your coffee brewed,

In a certain kind of way,

    Prepare it very differently.

Make a special kind of blend,

    Start a new caffeine trend.

If you walk, cycle or drive to work,

Go to work on a different route,

    It will awaken your senses,

This new exercise will bear fruit.

    Change your daily routine,

Push your boundaries in different ways.

Your mind will evolve and it will grow,

Making you more creative in so many ways.

When we change the way we live,

We change the way we think.

We change the way we see the world,

By creating new and brighter realities,

Projections of your imagination and creativity.

Always think of a brand-new way,

To start each and every waking day.

    Embrace your new positive destiny,

Filled with glory and great opportunities.

If you crave the simple life,

It can be yours if you only try,

To leave the complex and simplify.

Your mind will create a brand-new way,

For you to celebrate life every day.

Writer’s Note: This poem has been inspired by Sting’s song, Brand New day.

It’s Probably Me- Writing through Eternity

    Who is that writing ,

Through the night and through the day?

It is that writer who lives to write,

It is that writer who writes to live.

The writer says, "It’s probably me,

    Writing every day, through eternity."

    The city is sound asleep,

Yet, there is a writer somewhere,

In some dark corner of the world,

    Writing his or her dreams,

Under the light of the pale moon.

The writer says, "It’s probably me,

    Writing every day, through eternity."

There are stories being told every second,

Every minute, every hour, and every day,

As some writer somewhere keeps writing,

Hoping that it will pay to write someday.

It is the inner strength and spirit of a writer,

That keeps him or her writing every day,

Knowing that it may not ever pay.

The writer says, "It’s probably me,

    Writing every day, through eternity."

The writer who is forgotten by society,

Keeps writing her hopes and her dreams.

Making life easier and more bearable.

The life of a writer is not about celebration,

Red carpets and glasses of red wine.

A true writer keeps writing come what may,

As long as there is something important to say.

The writer says, "It’s probably me,

    Writing every day, through eternity."

If you just happen to be a true writer,

Not the one who uses generators and AI,

To write articles and stories a mile high,

    Have a Happy Author’s Day.

    Every true writer deserves success,

In every possible way today and every day.

Writer’s Note: This poem is inspired by the song, It’s Probably Me, from the movie Lethal Weapon, one of my favorite movie series.

When Content Dies Where It Lies

We know that we love to write,

About anything and everything in sight.

We write, rewrite, publish day and night,

About love, happiness and a nightmare fright.

To be a good writer write every day,

That is what every writer will say.

The more you write, the better it will be,

You should eventually earn a lot of money.

To be a great writer write about what matters,

Instead of a hundred articles like a word splatter.

To be known as a writer for all time,

Write articles, stories and every type of rhyme.

Publish your work on a platform sound,

Where it is always present and easily found.

Great content written over time slowly dies,

In the back alleys of publishing where it lies.

Revive your content from its dormant state,

    Refresh, rewrite, rework and rejuvenate.

Do not let your content evaporate and disappear,

Repurpose it before it becomes part of the ether.

When Content Dies Where It Lies,

Old Content disappears before your eyes.

Get Your Content to Earn You Cash

We write about what we know,

We write about what we do and see.

All our writings collect in a virtual store,

While leaves fall off a wintry tree.

Our collection of work grows and grows,

As high as the human eye can see,

Like a river that quickly overflows,

    Into the ever-widening embracing sea.

    The content that you create,

Is all the stuff that you own?

Which never goes out of date,

Like a tree it grows, till fully grown.

Get your literary content to earn you cash.

Convert it into courses, lectures and an eBook,

Before it is plagiarized by some malicious crook.

Let your invaluable content earn you cash,

To visibly increase your side-hustle stash.

When living becomes as normal as breathing

Living is an overuse of the strength of life and we just get better at it, till it is as normal as breathing. As an embryo in the womb, we are formed and we are shaped to best suit the world and the destiny we are moving towards in life.

As a toddler we crawl and find our way in this new world, we struggle to stand and learn all we can from our new environment. Our parents and elders are there to guide us in our struggle to develop our strengths and to overcome our weaknesses.

As teenagers we are more brash than confident in life, we are ready to take on the world. We have all the strengths which we use and we forget that we have weaknesses. As we reach youth, we are a bit more cautious having learned from our mistakes. We are conscious of our strengths and make an effort to improve on them. We look at our weaknesses and know that we need to work on them. Maybe we will try to overcome our weaknesses later in life, but for now, we just give in to them, we say to ourselves.

As adults with families and responsibilities, we know our strengths and weaknesses in this life experience. We also know that in order to achieve and accomplish whatever we need in life, requires us to have belief and strength to gain a comfortable existence.

When we reach our twilight years, our strengths and weaknesses are still present. We try to hold on to them for as long as possible, till both strengths and weaknesses drift away. During the course of our lives on earth, we as humans evolve into the experience of life, with the strength of living, which becomes as normal as breathing. Existence is both a strength and a weakness, which we have to overcome, challenge, and embrace during the course of our existence.

A Writer’s Bleeding Heart- Overflows into the world around

Abusy world just has no time,

For the beauty of prose and rhyme.

A writer plunges into the depths of emotion,

Seeing images, hearing sounds, causing a commotion.

Every honest writer who loves the craft,

Keeps on writing when others laugh.

A true writer does not his writing cease,

While others live a life of pleasure and ease.

A dedicated writer cannot bear a blank page,

She fills it up gradually stage by stage.

Every theme she develops into a plot,

She uses all the techniques of the story taught.

A writer bleeds her ideas as stories,

Into the minds and hearts of readers around.

She takes them on a journey through space and time,

As her readers sail high in the air high above the ground.

The true writer’s heart bleeds onto every page,

Every word is an emotion taken stage upon the stage.

Every story she fills with love, happiness, and rage,

As every character jumps off the literary page.

A writer’s heart bleeds with betrayal,

When his work is stolen by people unknown.

A writer’s heart is beaten and so broken,

When her honest work is brutally stolen.

The heart of a true writer breaks and cries,

Under the darkening stars and grey skies,

When they see before their very eyes,

That their work is wantonly plagiarized.

    A writer’s bleeding-heart pours into the world,

As creativity and imagination lie decaying in the dust.

A writer’s bleeding heart can only mend and heal,

When he or she writes with renewed trust and zeal.

    Mend a writer’s, wounded heart,

By offering some form of encouragement,

To make that person feel valued and cherished,

For providing us with literary entertainment.

    Heal a writer’s bleeding heart,

By taking the time and making the effort,

To read the work they have carefully created.

A little praise would make them feel elated.

A busy world just has no time,

For the beauty of prose and rhyme.

A writer plunges into the depths of emotion,

Seeing images, hearing sounds, causing a commotion.

    A writer’s bleeding heart,

    Overflows into the world around.

Every written piece does make a difference,

In it, a literary gem can always be found.

The Temporary Position- Learn, Earn and Win

    June just completed her university,

Life was filled with great opportunities.

She was ready to find her place in the world,

She was now about to be a career girl.

She looked high and low for jobs to find,

Nothing close to good or excellent came to mind.

One day she saw an advert for a temporary position,

    It was a short-term well-paying administrative position.

June got the job and she was over the moon.

The novelty wore out pretty soon.

    The months turned into years,

There were times she was in tears.

    Then one day everything changed,

Her work was rewarded and her life was rearranged.

June got a fantastic manager’s position,

A good pay hike was part of her promotion.

June was glad that she took that temporary position,

She was soon moving to the Director’s position.

Ten years later she was a success in her own right,

She had overcome so many barriers in sight.

Job available for a temporary position,

It could drastically change your life situation.

Opportunities always come from some direction,

It is up to you to make the final bold decision.

    It is just Hereditary

The color of your hair ,

    The color of your eyes,

From the way that you walk,

From the way that you talk,

    It is no great mystery,

It has got to be hereditary.

You could be as tall as your mother,

You could be as short as your father.

It always has something to do with your genes,

This is something that starts before your teens.

It is no great unsolved mystery,

It just has to be hereditary.

We inherit so much from our parents,

That it can sometimes make us wince.

There are the good qualities we gain,

There are negative things that can give pain.

There are genetic strengths than can put us at ease,

While there are genetic weaknesses that cause disease.

It is no great unexplained mystery,

It all boils down to heredity.

Make the best of all your traits,

Enjoy your life and its offerings on plates.

Understand your mind and the way it works,

Take care of your body and its quirks.

Use your strengths to live a positive life,

Understand your weaknesses that cause strife.

Life is always filled with happiness and pain,

Understand your life and celebrate all you gain.

It is no fantastic unsolved mystery,

It is all connected to and caused by heredity.

Radiating Strengths and Weaknesses make us Human

He was clumsy by nature ,

He was always slipping and sliding.

    He was awkward by nature,

    Falling here and slowly slipping.

His strength was that he was brilliant.

His mind was focused and radiant.

They loved Henry for all his faults,

His mind and spirit could do pole vaults.

She was always saying the wrongs things,

She was always doing the wrong things.

She was inevitably where should not be,

Her progress in life was a great mystery.

Sonia was an artist of great skill and repute,

She only wore the best-designed suit.

Yet, they loved her for all her weaknesses,

It was what made her so human,

Although her art was as ugly as sin.

Radiating our strengths makes us able,

To manage life as much as possible.

Radiating our weaknesses make us human,

Living, breathing, living, loving, man and woman.

We are all involved in life’s great evolution,

The Science of Life spurs this uncanny revolution.

We become better at life with our strengths,

We live our lives and hope that life never ends.

Our souls are made stronger we dare say,

As we face life’s challenges in every way.

Our weaknesses make us human today,

We celebrate our existence every day.

    Poetry Prompt: Dancing Shoes

We all have our flying dancing shoes,

That we take out to dance to celebrate.

Those special shoes we keep with care,

Are the same ones that are so rare.

Sarah took out her dancing shoes,

Shining and bright with a hundred hues.

It was going to be her very special day,

When the love of her life was there to stay.

The day Sarah wore her special shoes,

Was also the day, her lover left her to go away.

She was upset as she threw away her shoes,

They were something that she would never use.

Sarah said that she would never dance again,

In winter sunshine, snowfall, or in summer rain.

The day came when love visited her once again,

She took out her dancing shoes to dance once again.

Has there been a time in your life,

When you have put something away,

Because you would never use it anyway?

Then everything changes before you realize it,

You are ready to dance in the sun, rain, and ice.

The Ballroom in his Heart- They danced even when apart

He was a dancer extraordinaire ,

She danced like an angel on air.

They were a perfect couple on the dance floor,

Leaving the audience asking for more.

She could do the most graceful pirouette,

    With the most majestic silhouette.

He could lift her up in the air,

They were the most loved dancing pair.

    In life, they danced together,

They started a family within a year.

There was a ballroom in his heart,

They danced together even when apart.

The years came by and went on silver wings,

Life, love, and family moved away on strings.

The day came when she danced away on a star,

The Creator carried her like a blossoming flower.

Though he was not together with his love,

He knew that she watched him from up above.

She waited for him on the dance floor for eternity,

Their love was powerful and magical in its serenity.

What’s On Your Mind Today? Go and have you Say

We talk about the weather ,

    The rain and the sunshine.

We talk about the food we eat,

Burgers, meat, more steak and wine.

What was the state of play,

In your active and so busy life today?

Was it filled with great news,

Spread by people with compelling views?

    What’s on your mind today?

Is it the weather, the work,

The festive vacation or the perk,

Or the annoyingly pesky office clerk?

    What’s on your mind today?

Is it the sweet love of romance,

When your heart does a jolly dance,

Or is it some secret game of chance?

    What’s on your mind today?

    Go and have your say.

Is it the anxious wait for payday,

Or is it a feeling no words can say?

    Insomnia Blues and Streams

He tried to sleep that night,

He tried to sleep during the day.

She closed her eyes hoping to sleep,

Her dreams were not hers to keep.

He could not sleep and he could not dream.

Tired and exhausted he met every day.

She was awake and up all through the night,

Sleep and rest were nowhere in sight.

It was a case of the insomnia blues and streams,

They were not welcome into the Gates of Dreams.

They could not dine at the banquet of Morpheus,

They were not welcome in dreams and nightmares.

Then one day they met Mister Dream,

The one man who could quieten the mind.

They meditated with Mister Dream for a day,

He chased all the demons of insomnia away.

Clear your mind of thoughts of every kind,

To free yourself of a disturbed state of mind.

Meditate in silence with no thoughts today,

It will help you to drive insomnia away.

Born Ready, to do what in life?

It was a popular saying ,

    I was born Ready,

So, he said it all the time,

It sounded good but it was not a rhyme.

    He took up every challenge,

He did the most daring things,

Flying in the air without wings.

He was born ready to face the world,

He lost and he won but he moved on,

To greater challenges, he was born.

Were you born ready to face,

    Challenges in every place?

To do the most daring things in life,

To try your hand at everything,

To let imagination, fly without a wing.

Were you born to make millions?

To rid the world of hunger and poverty,

To bring world peace and serenity.

Were you born to change the world,

To bring about love and equality,

To all humanity the gift of prosperity.

    Were you born to paint,

The most beautiful art every day?

    Were you born to write,

To change the world with your words?

To change the minds and the hearts,

Of humanity and people have grown apart.

You were born to make a difference,

In the minds and hearts of people,

It does require your time and patience.

You were born to change the world,

The little spot that you live in today.

The world where you live, love, work, and play.

Our world is made up of so many tiny ones,

The worlds that we all occupy, at home and work.

You were born ready, to change our world,

To bring more color, life, and love to it,

Making it more peaceful and brightly lit.

Raging River Turbulent Mind, Calm Waters We Hope to Find

    The river runs quickly ,

    The river runs deep.

    The mind moves fast,

    Even faster when asleep.

    From the mountains tall,

    The wild, wild, river flows,

    Down the steep mountainside,

Through the land of white snows.

The mind is alive with new thoughts,

It sees, hears, and feels everything.

    The neurons blast each tiny
