The heart of this photograph is a length of shiny gold fabric that covers the faces of two Black women who are seated on a couch, joining them as one magical unit despite the space between them. There are subtle differences in the fit of the pink dress worn by the woman on the left, and the yellow dress worn by the woman on the right. The tightness or looseness of their clasped hands in their laps mirrors not only their dresses, but also the fabric covering their faces. This photograph makes me contemplate notions of sisterhood, agency, loss, and freedom.
