THE YARD SALE

JENNIFER, GET A move on it, Gail called from the kitchen door. The Early Birds are here.

What time was it? Was it daylight yet? I peered out my living room window to see the first hint of a summer day arriving and two cars parking in front of my house. Unbelievable!

I pulled on a green tank top and shoved my feet into a pair of white sandals.

Big women emerged from the vehicles. A couple of them hadn’t taken the time to comb their hair. The Early Birds were hunting for bargains and weren’t wasting a minute. A black F-150 pickup rolled up to the curb, pulling an empty trailer. Two men climbed out of the cab, and I
