    Preface

I grew up in Rural Mobile, Alabama, in the 70s and early 80s until my mother, a single parent then, abruptly moved me and Monique, my only and one-year older sibling, to the inner city of Camden, New Jersey. My mother had been recently accepted to Rutgers University law school.

My mother’s acceptance into the prestigious university was considered a triumph for any African American, let alone a black single mother of two, back when it was still a big ask to dream big. However, the move was a nightmare for my sister and me.

As Deep South transplants, we didn’t fit in in the now super urban environment of Camden, NJ. I remember my sister and I would cry every morning, begging our mother to let us stay home to avoid our thick southern accents and less-than-trendy clothing being mocked. We fought bullies every day on our own because we didn’t have cousins or friends to defend us.

We knew nothing about brands or rap music—we were two naïve young girls—and we were punished for it. I often retreated into my own world to control the narrative because I felt safer there. My silent prayers of a fair world seemly go unheard, and I learned early that life isn’t always fair and you’re your only savior.

Things seemingly got better as my mother graduated law school and began to work for the Atlantic City Public Defenders office. My sister and I were now attending a private school, which allowed us to receive a much more competitive education, and the children were more diverse and accepting.

However, my mother could not escape from debt—lots and lots of student loans and credit card debt—that kept her from ever truly getting ahead, even up until her untimely death at the young age of 50 by a heart attack.

I had just entered my first term of military service with a baby girl of my own, and my sister barely had two feet on the ground as a young adult. My mother was over $150,000 in debt with no savings, and her small home was pending foreclosure. We had no money to pick up the $25,000 plus the funeral bill placed in front of us.

My memories of that time completely changed the projection of my life. I wanted nothing to do with debt or law (although the latter happened later in my life). I saw it as oppressive and ultimately decreasing one’s quality of life.
