Chapter 1 - The appeal of the tiny house

Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful.

    –John Maeda

In recent years, there has been a surge of interest in tiny houses. This interest in designing, building and living in tiny houses has become so popular so quickly that it has even been called a movement. People are downsizing from large sprawling houses or are never even buying them at all. There seems to be a change in the attitude and outlook of the modern house builder and buyer, and that change is tiny houses.

What exactly is a tiny house? A tiny house is defined as any home that contains less than 400 square feet and costs $20,000 to $50,000 to build or own. Although this is the definition of a tiny house, most people who design or purchase tiny houses consider any residential structure less than 500 square feet to fall into that category. There is some debate as to whether houses over 500 but under 1000 square feet can be considered tiny, especially by those in the movement

Tiny houses include many different styles and construction methods. There are stick-built homes that look like miniature versions of larger timber dwellings. Some tiny houses resemble fairy tale cottages or grown up-sized play houses. There is a movement inside the tiny house movement itself to repurpose giant metal shipping containers as the basis for contemporary tiny houses. Tiny houses can have porches and some even have a second floor or loft. Some tiny houses are on the grid and some are ecologically 100% green with solar panels and composting toilets. Some tiny houses are built by construction companies, some are prefabricated and others are build entirely by hand by their owners. Some are even mobile
