Shipping Container Homes - Sarah Benson
Introduction
Why live small? Over the past decades the trend in living is to build bigger and better houses all the time. When we become independent for the first time we live in a smaller home but as we become more successful at work we start to covet things, symbols of our success. One of those symbols is often the home that we store our other stuff in.
For many people the large aspirational home is the ultimate symbol of the American dream, success writ large for everyone to see. Do you really need it? Do you need the kitchen, diner and a separate utility and formal dining room? Do you need the family den and the formal living room and that guest bedroom that is used by Aunt Edna once a year? How much value do all these spaces add to your life?
When you really start to question whether you need the space a whole host of other considerations come into play. That spare bedroom costs a lot of money to heat even when it is not in use, you have to spend extra time to clean it and just think of how much money that room cost you to buy and how many years it added to your homeowner loan!
Living small makes sense. It allows you to save money both on purchase and maintenance as well as furnishing and cleaning costs. Living small makes you disciplined, you can’t buy things you don’t need if you have nowhere to hide them away and living small is good for your carbon footprint and for the environment.
With all these benefits the real question is why would you not live small?
Many people have asked themselves this exact same question and decided to take the plunge. Whether they are touring the country in an RV or saving building costs by fashioning their small but perfect home out of shipping containers
