CHAPTER 1
SPECIAL AGENT
My name is Oren Potentia, and I’m a wizard. Not just a run-of-the-mill wizard, I’m a special agent of the US Government, licensed to protect and serve the nation from the nastiest, most vile demons straight out of hell you can imagine.
I am dedicated to protecting and serving the citizens of this great nation. In fact, my wife would say I work too much. I glanced at the clock in my tower office. It was straight up 5 o’clock. With a grin, I decided to surprise her and quit for the day on time.
I hit save and listened to the floppy drive protest as it saved my current work and then pushed back from the green screen of my new IBM computer, where I had been hammering away at the latest reports to the generals at the Pentagon in DC. I looked down at my desk calendar, seeing the weeks ahead of me filled in with important meetings, travel, and who knew what else. Today was November 3rd, 1980, and my secretary had left my daughter’s birthday free and clear at my request. It’s not every day your little girl turned three, after all.
Taking the spiral stairs down two at a time, I yelled for my crew to shut down for the day and spied them already packing up, everyone except Garret, my resident vampire on the night shift. He was sitting at one of our new monitoring systems, staring at the green screen with frustration. I can’t remember my password,
he grumbled.
It’s RAVEN, Garret,
Dallas said, picking up his suit jacket from where it hung on the back of his office chair. He grinned and shook his head good-naturedly.
I knew it was something like that,
Garret said, his lithe fingers flying over the keys so quickly I couldn't see them. His vampire reflexes made him an incredibly fast typist. The computer’s innards moaned, and the green monster came to life, flashing as it came online. I’ll be here all night, as usual. You all out?
Yes, page me if you need me,
I said, slipping the black pager into my belt and checking to make sure it was on.
Enjoy your evening,
Garret said. I’ve got the delivery coming at 7 p.m. with my blood bags.
Noted,
I said, waving at Arlene, my secretary who was just leaving. Garret was a vampire, but a good one. That's why he came to work for me, actually. He was tired of the nomadic lifestyle; he
