Sarah
Being famous isn’t all fan love and flowers thrown at the stage.
I’m not famous—most people don’t know my face from a hole in the ground—but as the youngest daughter of a country music icon, I know a thing or two about the dark side of being in the public eye.
My mom, Penny Bellwether, owns a ranch in Wyoming, a mansion in Nashville, and several vacation homes. She also has a private jet, a masseuse who travels with her on tour to attend to her injured shoulder, and she paid my six older siblings’ college tuition in cash.
She’s also been stalked, threatened, and cyberbullied more times than I can count on both hands and feet.
When I was younger, I used to scroll through her social media comments, shocked to my core that anyone could write such hateful things about my generous, sweet, and extremely charitable mother. Mom personally funds a chain of fifty no-kill shelters for aging dogs and cats. She plays concerts for free to help raise money for farm aid and victims of natural disasters. And she’s in her fifties, which is about as far from an overhyped little trailer trash tart
as you can get.
I mean, yes, she is technically little—we’re both barely five feet tall—but she’s a grown woman with four decades of performing history under her belt and so many Grammys and Country Music Awards that Dad had to build a second mantle above the fireplace in her office to hold them all.
She’s a talented performer, a consummate professional, and a boss—not a tart.
She’s also stubborn as hell when it comes to protecting her kids, so I know better than to argue when she wakes me at dawn the day after Christmas and informs me that I’m going into hiding for a few days.
Or maybe a few weeks,
she adds in a casual tone I’m not buying for a second as she opens my drawers and starts pulling out jeans, underwear, and sweaters. Just until we get a few things sorted out.
What things?
I sit up in bed, running a hand through my wild brown curls, wishing my hair behaved itself like my mother’s. But I wake up every morning looking like I’ve been electrocuted. It’s just one of the many ways I’m nothing like the rest of the effortlessly fashionable, gorgeous, put-together people in my family.
I’m the runt of the litter in so many ways, but I’m not stupid. The moment Mom turns to me with a tight smile and says, Nothing serious. Just some old nonsense,
I know who’s to blame for my six a.m. wake-up call.
My blood goes cold and my stomach balls into a knot. It’s Glen, isn’t it? He’s back.
She shakes her head. Probably not. Chances are it’s a false alarm. Like that time in Kansas City when Daddy and I first got together.
My mother’s excessively creepy stalker, Glen, is currently around seventy years old. He’s also been to prison—twice—once for stalking Mom when she was a teenager and once for breaking into the nursery at the hospital the day my older sister, Clara, was born and trying to kidnap her.
After that, Mom decided to have her final baby—me—at home, even though Glen was back in prison by the time she was ready to give birth.
I hate that an evil man scared my mother so much that she didn’t feel safe delivering her
