W hen I met Luis Angel he was a peasant boy born in the Cueva Santa village of the Municipality of Manizales Capital of the Department of Caldas, we had a farm in the La Cabaña Village, close to the Cueva Santa Village also in Manizales, but we Unlike Luis Angel, we lived in the City, but we went for a walk on the weekends to the La Cabaña farm. When they introduce me to Luis Angel was ten years old and he was twelve, because he was two years older than me.
It caught my attention that Luis Angel was walking around with an old 22-caliber rifle and with U ammunition, that´s what those small bullets with which he loaded his old rifle were called in our land. He also had a small medium-size lemon and white Beagle dog, very friendly but excitable, he had baptized her with the name of Lunita, she was his ideal companion to hunt animals in the woods of the village. That Sunday my parents introduced him to me, because all of us in my house had gone to visit Luis Angel´s parents at his farm, he invited me to go hunting with Lunita to the forest.
He had attended the Village School to learn to read and write and the four fundamental operations of Arithmetic: Add, subtract, multiply and divide, as soon as he learned it his parents withdrew him from the school to workwith them on the farm. With his old 22-caliber rifle he had a great aim, where he put his eye, he put the bullet. He shot everything that crawled, moved or flew, it was the satisfaction of the hunter that he carried within him.
That Sunday we crossed the forest that was between the coffee plantations of his parent´s farm, Lunita ran in circles around us sniffing the ground; suddenly we saw a squirrel jump to the branch of a tree, Lunita tried to climb the tree but could not, Luis Angel for not hurting Lunita, could not shoot the squirrel either, Lunita returned to where we were, she had a sad face, but her master rewarded her by rubbing her from head to tail, he also told her that it would be another time.
Every time my parents agree to visit Luis Angel´s parents farm, I asked them to take me with them. My idea was to go hunting animals with Luis Angel and Lunita, sometimes the death of the animals made me sad, but he conforted me by saying that it was the only way to know their tracks, that way he would find out which animal they were tracking.
On one of my mid-year vacation at the Cabaña farm, I spent all my time going hunting with Luis Angel and Lunita,I learned how to eat turtledove meat and how it was roasted in the forest, so we wouldn´t have to going to the farm house to get food, he also taught me to recognized the armadillo´s burrow, find out when the animals was inside, and how to get it out of it, we pulled it out alive by grabbing its tail, immediately killed it and he taught me how to remove the shell and roast it, this meat was exquisite.
During the December vacation, I returned to the farm. As soon as Luis Angel found out that I had arrived, he ran to tell me that Lunita had given birth to two puppies, so I agreed to go the next day to meet them.
When I arrived, Luis Angel led me quickly to the place where Lunita was lying down nursing her two puppies. As soon as the saw us, she began to
