Doubt Destroyer - David Viergutz
CHAPTER 1
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
Let me start off by saying this book is not to be read as a textbook. It is a collection of my thoughts and philosophies applied to real-world situations which encourages perspective in addressing the precursor to inaction – self-doubt. This book is not life-altering, but you can be. By taking the concepts and ideas discussed here and applying them to your specific situation, you will learn the skills to change your life.
Change itself implies action. To change is to make different, alter or modify, and doing so must be a conscious decision. If I were to hand you a pile of cash, you still must accept it. If I told you a supreme being was sent to save you from your sins, you must choose to have faith. These actions put you in control.
There is a parallel to action, and that is inaction. To do nothing at all can be worse than doing something wrong. When you do something wrong, there is still the opportunity to learn from the mistake. Inaction will only leave doubts as to what could have been.
DOUBT
Whenever someone picks up a book, there is an inherent level of skepticism that comes with it. The skepticism stems from our natural desire to not want to be disappointed. There is always the risk of disappointment when you pick up a new book, especially if it is a self-help or motivational book. These usually come with big promises, such as getting rich or instantly fixing whatever arbitrary problem you might have. There are no lofty goals promised in this book, only another way of thinking that addresses a common problem, self-doubt.
A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
As the author, it is my job to convince you that you need this book. The concepts that I discuss here, and the way I discuss them, are just a few of the many ways to approach the same issue. Doubt preys on our minds and acts as an internal check and balance system that we use to make excuses and hold back from our own potential.
Electricity, human rights, space travel, the Internet, modern medicine: these are feats that were deemed impossible or mocked as outlandish fantasies. Today we have electric cars, the freest country in the world, commercial space travel, a unifying system of information, and the ability to fight cancer. Every day a new spectacular invention hits the market, a new solution or gadget designed to make your life better.
Is it possible that these great creators doubted themselves? Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, had to shut down one of his companies to fuel the other. Was it possible he doubted himself along the way? The Wright brothers brought five sets of spare parts every time they tested their flying machines. Their perseverance led to commercialization of human flight. Elon Musk’s decision to axe one of his companies paved the way for Tesla to thrive and, now, electric cars are affordable for the average consumer.
But what if they quit? Where would we be today? The answer is terrifying when thinking about other great accomplishments like the Polio vaccine or the internet, knowing that if doubt had crippled those people, it would have taken much longer for their discovery, product, or service to come about. If ever.
That is what I am aiming to address in this book. Great things should never be delayed by inaction. You might ask: what if you’re not trying to cure cancer, or create the next electric car? What if you’re the average Joe and you know full well, you’re trapped by doubt, suffering from inaction, and aimlessly floating through life? I am assuming you have goals and aspirations, things that require your actions to become real. I am like you, the Average Joe, capable of what I have decided is my greatness.
In this book, I will teach you the steps that have shifted my mindset from a student of doubt to a teacher of action. I’ve been a soldier, a police officer, overcome disability, pulled myself out of depression, written more than ten books, set up two successful businesses, earned three degrees, became a personal trainer, and a fathered two beautiful girls.
These are my Average Joe accomplishments. I’m not a CEO, or a corporate powerhouse. I am a man who chose to never hold myself back again. There are plenty of other people who want to tear you down. Why would I do that to myself? I am over it. And I can teach you to be over it too.
If you notice one thing about the things I’ve written above, let it be that all of them include some level of difficulty. Nothing above was necessarily easy for me. There were a lot of times I could have screwed the pooch and fueled my inner critic with negativity. But once I overcame negativity, all I saw was possibility. Without the constant focus on what could be wrong, your attention is free to become focused on the future.
You might wonder if my list of accomplishments is a good enough qualifier to talk to you about self-doubt. I would say so. I wish I had this book every time I failed a test in college, or was denied a promotion, or was halfway through a book and felt like a fraud. On the surface, I am just a guy who set out to do everything he's ever wanted to do and never failed to learn something along the way. I adopted a mindset that left no room for a defeatist mentality.
And this is the result. When you destroy self-doubt, statements such as, I can’t do it
cease to exist. What you are left with is a problem-solving mentality that is fueled by perseverance. You become your greatest fan, instead of your harshest critic.
Simply put, if you have ever doubted yourself, then this book is for you because the ideas and the concepts do not change. We have heard them repeatedly over the years defined as mindset, manifestation, living your dream, and visualizing your future. We have heard these teachings from coaches and gurus and CEOs and Presidents. But have we ever heard it from the little guy? Have we ever heard it from the perspective of a beat cop who discovered he has unlimited potential?
I do not have a doubt in my mind that if I wanted to learn to scuba-dive, I could figure out how to do it right now. In 2020, I figured out how to get my pilot’s license for less than it would cost me to buy a car. I mapped out expenses in time and money benefits and drawbacks. But most of all, I figured out why I wanted to do it and did not have a shred of doubt that I could.
This is what you will learn from me: a system of discovering yourself, so you understand what motivates you. You will learn my step-by-step process to destroy self-doubt so that the opinions of others bear no weight, unless you allow them to.
Through the course of this book, I hope that you take any or all of what I say and understand that it is not validated from a position of authority or qualification. It is validated in the universal truth that we are our own worst enemy. And by the end of this book, you will have a system to identify what you want most and what makes you happy. You will learn to shed the doubt that is holding you back from the pursuit of that happiness, and you will master a decision-making skill at the center of it all. A skill I call "Finding your Greater Why."
CHAPTER SUMMARY
Self-doubt is the source of a multitude of problems, and the removal of it from your life is a perfect way to give yourself the motivation required to do anything you desire. The greatest accomplishments of humankind were only possible due to an uncanny determination to persist even in the face of doubt. Even though these accomplishments seem beyond reach, there are many steps you can take to better yourself and work to release the doubt that may be hindering your progress toward your goals.
This process can be frightening because it is hard to let go of self-doubt and hesitancy, but by the end of the book you will have the building blocks responsible for working towards a better future. The first and most important aspect of this process is mastering your own identity so you find the thing that motivates you emotionally, something called your "Greater Why."
CHAPTER 2
THE GREATER WHY
UNDERSTANDING THE VALUE OF YOUR DECISIONS
The powers of a man’s mind are directly proportional to the quantity of coffee he drinks.
-SIR JAMES MACKINTOSH
Caffeine is the most widely consumed legal drug on the planet with over 50% of adults consuming caffeine daily, normally as coffee. Coffee referred to as motivation in a cup, and there is something to say about the quick energy boost that comes with it. But no one is moving mountains with a cup of coffee alone. Its benefits are short lived, and depending on your body, come with a crash. As
