Three Months With You - Sasha Lynn

    ONE

The thing about vacation romances is that they end too quickly. It could be a month-long romance in Greece, a semester abroad in London with a dreamy Brit, or a short five-day fling in Hawaii like mine and Adam's.

It had been two months since I left Hawaii. Adam and I were still in contact, although not as much as we were at first. In the beginning, we talked on the phone and texted a lot. Now, we texted a few times a week and tried to send a longer email every week or two.

Things felt okay between us, but I knew the distance took a huge toll. Our texts went from flirty to more friendly and I wasn't sure what to do about it.

Luckily, my best friend Beth had some ideas.

Summer starts in three weeks. Haven't you saved up? Just fly down there and surprise him! Change into lingerie in the airport bathroom and wear it and a raincoat, and just jump on that hot body as soon as he opens the door, she said.

Our emails are more about catching up now. Nothing dirty like they were at first. I don't know if I can just jump him anymore. Things have...fizzled.

Of course they have. You're, like, four thousand miles away. Long distance takes a lot of work. Skyping, watching a movie together while on the phone, playing games together in an app, sending gifts. I Google'd this, Chlo. I'm an expert. If things have fizzled, you just need to heat them back up. Bring the relationship back to a boil.

I don't know if this is technically a relationship. It was five days. We haven't had a serious talk about us yet.

So talk. Chloe, you're just making up excuses. What's really going on? Beth stared at me hard.

I sighed. I'm afraid it's fizzling because he's not interested or he's found someone else. What if I put myself out there and get hurt?

What if you don't get hurt? What if he's thinking the exact same thing? she asked.

Okay, she got me there. It was definitely possible Adam was four thousand miles away thinking these exact same things.

My phone dinged with a new email. Beth swiped it out of my hands and a smile appeared on her face.

Speak of the devil, she said.

I grabbed my phone and looked at it. There was a new email from Adam.

I'll leave you to it. Call me later? Beth grabbed her purse and headed for my door.

    I will, I said.

Once she was gone I poured a glass of red wine and sat down to read his email.

    Dear Chloe,

Today was a really weird day. I ran an adoption special all week and I had fifteen dogs go to homes, which was great. But a few hours ago this woman came in and had her eye on Steve. As you know, I haven't found the perfect home for him yet. So, this woman walked around the property with him, pet him, asked me all kinds of questions about him. She has a property on the beach here and teaches surf lessons, so Steve would get a lot of attention and be a free-range beach bum. It's kind of the perfect life for a Hawaiian dog, don't you think? I do.

But I told her no. Without even really thinking about it, I told her he wasn't currently available. And so I've been sitting over here thinking about why I did that. Why I denied Steve a potential great home.

    And it's you. You're why.

Steve is the reason we happened. If he hadn't been sniffing around those gas station hot dogs of yours, our story may have stopped when I gave you water after you got lost in the forest. Giving Steve up felt like I was giving you up. And I'm not ready to do that.

I know things have felt weird lately. And I think we've both been pulling away for our own reasons. But today, with Steve and that woman, everything suddenly became clear for me.

I need to see you. Not on Skype, but in person.

A friend of mine is getting married next week in Wyoming and I'm a groomsman. After the wedding...can I come to Chicago?

    Still yours,

    Adam

I gulped down my wine and stared at my screen. My heart pounded in my ears. Adam outside Hawaii was a bit of a daunting thought. I only knew Hawaii Adam, and he only knew on-vacation Chloe.

But that spark between us was too big to forget about. I hit reply.

    Dear Adam,

Honestly, I'm glad you didn't let her have Steve. I will be crushed when he goes to a new home.

    I think I know
