    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    CHAPTER ONE

    Cassie’s Family

    Age 9: Grade 4

Cassie, short for Cassandra, was a nine-year-old girl who lived in a small town. Young Cassie was a happy and adventurous girl and like many kids her age, she was trying to figure out how to fit in.

Her mother, Joyce, was Cassie’s best friend. Joyce worked in technology and tried her very best—like many parents—to provide a happy home. She also wanted to make sure Cassie’s unique background and cultural traditions were not forgotten.

Cassie’s grandmother, Ma, also lived with them.

Joyce had a very optimistic outlook on life and the future for her and Cassie. She was intelligent and focused on Cassie, making sure she was as happy as she could possibly be. She understood Cassie’s family on her father’s side was from another country and spoke Arabic, not English. She also wanted Cassie to understand her cultural background while they lived in the United States. Joyce knew Cassie’s background made her unique and stand out. She also understood it meant hearing questions like Why do you celebrate Easter as you do? or, Why don’t you speak Arabic fluently?
