Chapter One.
Dragons had never flown in the valley before. Well okay, there were several species of dragon fly, flying around, if you wanted to include those. They were populous and flew about over the large lakes and connecting waterholes that had formed millions of years beforehand after a gigantic volcanic upsurge. Steep almost vertical cliffs at the Northern end of the valley were the only remnants left of the once great volcanoes. Now, wide sheets of water fell down from those sky high cliffs, through dense layers of swirling cloud and mist, further on down, thousands of feet down, to finally land with an extremely loud roaring noise into the deep water pool that feed the wide river. Then the swift flowing waters, rushed further along their way, to finally steady, pooling to create those beautiful wide lakes.
This green valley was nature’s treasure, a vast masterpiece of creation, forty miles wide and one hundred miles long, thick with woodlands that almost ran down to the edges of the lakes from the high hills that surrounded them. This was the reason why June had settled here in the first place. To see the rather large dragon flying overhead, skimming across the dawning skyline, brought to June a deep sense of alarm. Had they finally found her? June had thought herself safe from 'The Clan' after all of these years. She stood erect from kneeling beside her small garden weeding, she stared in awe, she froze, perfectly still, almost mesmerised by the site of the huge beast as it casually glided, drifting over her valley with a graceful yet menacing ease. Had it seen her? Probably. She knew that those huge cat like eyes could easily see something as small as a butter-fly at a distance of a thousand yards.
Katawa flew down to settle upon a large, jagged protrusion of rock just above the waterfall. Large wings folded in and back, as huge claws dug into stone to gain purchase. Crumbling stone fell away down into the abyss below. The morning sunlight, reflecting away from his deep black, almost mirror finish scales that defined his family's linage, created bright spots of light on the rock around him. The higher vantage point gave him a commanding view over the entire valley. From here he could view it all, and he liked very much what he saw. This beautiful valley was an untouched natural wonderland, a perfect new hunting ground for their clan. Only the human woman and her tiny vegetable garden marred an otherwise pristine landscape. But she shouldn’t present any problem to their clan. She would be either enslaved or destroyed, dependent upon her willingness to cooperate with the clan.
He looked more closely at the woman, recognition developing slowly grew within his mind. Was that the mage that had defeated Richton the clan chieftain, and escaped from Kinsvale many years ago? Yes it was her! His scales shuddered, as he remembered back to ten years previous, throwing more brilliant speckles of light into the world about him. Immediately he closed off his mind from any psychic contact before he could be attacked by the human witch. A name came to mind. June! Yes it definitely was her.
Katawa's approach to the situation required caution, the woman held strong magical powers, and was apparently impervious to the individual psychic powers of a single dragon. From memory, June had held four of their clan members, including Richton his father, inside her magical net of immobility as she had made her escape. The effects of which took days to wear off. Yes, Katawa realised that it would be far better if he pretended disinterest, and returned home to Kinsvale. The clan would be extremely interested in what he had discovery this day. The woman would have to be taken and her mind examined by the clan Shaman, to find out her bloodline. The clan would then have to kill every one of them to ensure that they continued to rule Kinsvale unopposed. With just the slightest flutter of his long thick leathery wings, Katawa lifted up and away from his lofty perch to soar out across the valley once more. June remained still as the giant beast drifted up high upon the thermal winds, only to drive down with lightning speed and fly low across the connecting lakes towards her. She felt the disturbance of the air around her as the mighty dragon passed her by. Then the black dragon turned sharply, gliding up and over the forest towards the far distant hill tops. It was gone within seconds, as it disappeared into the sun drenched Eastern skyline with a golden flash from it’s scaled body. However not so quick that June didn’t recognise him. Katawa! June's old slave master. June also knew that she would have been positively identified in those few moments of time and that more dragons would return before very long.
Her body began to run automatically before her brain kicked in and she fully realised her dilemma. June's only option was to flee from her home, and quickly, before Katawa returned with forces to great for her to handle on her own. June could subdue one dragon easily, and hold back several if it came to it, but she knew in her heart that Richton would lead a flight back within days. He would probably bring the Sharman Sagen along too, a dragon whom held mighty psychic powers. If enough of them returned, then together they held enough power to overcome and recapture June. In haste she ran to her home, a hollowed out tree trunk inside the forest. It had housed her for over seven years, protecting her from the wild beasts of the forest and inclement weather. It had taken more than two years to turn the hollow into a home and create her garden. In a few minutes it would become just another abandoned place for nature to reclaim. June released the tame poultry that she had kept for the eggs. She dressed herself in her travel clothing. Tough buck skin trousers and long sleeve jacket with hand mitts attached to the sleeves. The chickens clucked about her feet as she pulled on calf length boots made from hard leather. June grabbed her bug out bag from the shelf and threw it upon her back. Her water skin, quiver, bow, staff, long knife and flint were all there readied, for just such an emergency. The long knife was sheathed in the right boot, her precious flint placed carefully in a pouch and attached to her belt. The quiver went over her left shoulder, along with it’s selection of arrows, it also held the short yew wood bow. She collected up the staff and water bag before walking out the door. June didn’t bother to waste time closing up the house, she just tossed the remaining corn out for the birds and left it all to the random elements of fate.
As June made her way through the thick undergrowth towards the nearest lake she reminisced her previous life. Born in Tamer, and a member of the royal family, her early years were pleasantly spent playing with her siblings within the vast castle and it’s estate grounds. A merry time of learning about the world through books, tutor’s and her personal experience. June had an elder brother Lars who had taken his good looks from their elven father. His tall wiry frame led up to an angelic face with bright green eyes that sparked with elven fire. His pointed ears, stuck out from his mop of golden curls
