They moved to America to join their son, his wife, and two beautiful granddaughters.     Tom was 16 years old. He lived with his mother in one of Laird John’s cottages. Tom’s father had died five years earlier and had worked for the Laird on his estate in Scotland. Laird John was a very kind employer, he allowed Tom and his mother to stay on in the cottage as long as they wished. Tom had just finished school and was now also working for Laird John, doing odd jobs up at the manor house and helping in the garden and estate.

    One day, Tom had been on an errand for old Stan the gardener. On his return he took a shortcut through a small wood. It was such a beautiful spring day; the sun was shining through the trees and there was the scent of Lily of the Valley in the air. It was so peaceful here in this enchanted little wood.

    As Tom walked along dreaming of this and that, thinking of nothing in particular, he heard what sounded like a baby crying. Tom looked around but couldn’t see anything. Then all went quiet. He called out, Where are you? I know you're near. The crying started
