Java en Nederland verenigd in één dichter.Noto Soeroto debuteerde als dichter in 1915, met de bundel 'Melatiknoppen'. Hij werd meteen opgemerkt door de grote aandacht voor esthetische details in zijn werk. Onder invloed van de Indische Nobelprijswinnaar Rabindranath Tagore liet Soeroto meer mystiek toe in zijn poëzie, een combinatie die tot bloei kwam in 'Lotos en morgendauw' (1920). Soeroto werd ook buiten Java gewaardeerd, doordat hij beschrijvingen van de Javaanse natuur doordesemde met een heel westerse belezenheid. -
