    The Hive stirred.

Most of the drones would be awakened now, preparing for a day among the others. They would march with silent duty into the cleaning stalls where they would be reluctantly stripped from their uniforms. From there, they would be taken to dressing rooms where clothing awaited. Some were acquired from the homes of the drones before they became part of the Hive. Everything was used or repurposed to be made useful. While they dressed and applied makeup for the women, their programming collected fragments of their old personalities to be used in public. The pleasure was kept to a low hum to prevent the drones from distraction.

Other drones returned from their jobs or dates or recruitment efforts. One of the men returned with a college girl called Fran. She was being shown indoctrination messages to open her mind for programming. She would be useful to the Hive in one way or another. Now, she moaned at the pleasure of the dawning realization that she was being claimed and remade for her new life as a drone.

While the drones readying for the outside world prepared, more of the drones continued work beneath the sidewalks and streets, connecting two apartment buildings, now, along with several businesses. The Hive had claimed these for its nest, and the nest grew.

Out of the collective murmurings of the minds connected by the Hive, a new directive emerged. The Hive had grown and now it would need its queen. A thousand minds paused to wait for the Hive to name its leader, but no name came, and soon the Hive went about its business, a hollow place in its consciousness carved by the new need for its guiding hand. They, the interconnected minds of the Hive, would choose when the time was right. For now, it was more important to keep itself hidden. Soon there would be too many drones in places of power for the Hive to fear. Today was not yet that day. And so, when it first detected the invaders, for a moment, the Hive did fear. And then it planned.

Kristen watched the front door of the Lakeview Apartments building, her smart phone trained on the doorway, too. When it opened, she tapped the record button and observed while a line of women and a handful of men emerged all at once from the building, scattering as they went like the seeds from a dandelion. They were all different in shape and size and dress, but there was a uniformity in the way they silently dispersed, aimed at unknown points on the map. A few passed in front of Kristen's small SUV. None looked into the window to see her staring.

Thursday morning, she said, narrating as she adjusted the phone on her dash to follow more of the residents. It's 7:30 and it's like the alarm for the whole building went off at the same time. No sign of Jules, but this was the last place she checked in. There is definitely something going on. These people are acting like the Stepford neighbors or something.

    Anything else?

The voice buzzing in her ear was older, raspy with smoke, but still feminine. If she liked older women, Kristen might have even called that voice sultry.

"Nothing I can see. Want me to try to
