    Ascending Angel - Ellen Wefler

    Aliyah

Nathan watched as Racquel, his so-called servant, allowed each young lady to enter the dark candlelit room. Awaiting Nathan’s choice, each girl stood facing him trembling in fear. Racquel nodded her head which silently told the girls to undress. Nathan tapped his cigar as he watched but didn’t really pay attention. One of the girls was about naked which caused Nathan to surprisingly and suddenly feel sick. Stop, that’s enough…leave, just leave! Nathan shouted.

The girls looked at one another, confused and worried they did something wrong.

Noticing the serious expression on Nathan’s face, Racquel quickly scooted the girls out of the room.

One of the girls, still gathering her clothes, wasn’t moving fast enough. I said leave…LEAVE NOW! Nathan’s thunderous voice made the room shake causing a few of the candles to fall over. The remaining girl held her clothes tightly against her body and ran for the exit as fast as she could.

Nathan threw his cigar across the room then plopped himself down on the side of his bed. The warmth from his heated red eyes stung as tears began to build. He hung his head low looking not only sad but pathetic.

Uh, something wrong my Prince, problems? Racquel asked as she finished putting out the small fires from the fallen candles.

Nathan didn’t respond; he remained unusually quiet.

What, were they not young enough or pretty enough? If you ask me, they were perfect. They were all curly blondes, just like you desire. I know the one had brown eyes but finding blue eyed curly headed blondes isn’t easy you know. Racquel muttered as she finished cleaning up the mess Nathan’s roar had made.

Nathan stared at the floor in silence. Hearing his subordinate go on and on, he could only think of one thing. Closing his eyes, he saw Sara…his wife. He visioned her eyes, face, hair, and remembered her familiar scent. Nathan felt a tear fall and became enraged over what was happening to him…he was starting to feel again. After quickly standing up, he grabbed a lamp and then tossed it across the room, causing it to shatter in a thousand pieces all over the floor. Nathan then picked up a priceless vase he had taken from a Prince in England. After tossing the vase up and down in the air a few times, he threw it at a mirror nearby. He then leaned his head against a wall and hit it hard with his fists over and over while repeating, Why, it’s not possible…why dammit why? One strong punch sent his hand through the wall causing a large crack down to the floor. I hate you God. I don’t know what in the hell you are up to, but it won’t work! Nathan screamed as he looked up then fell to his knees.

Nathan, whispered Racquel, what’s going on what has happened? Dammit Nathan, talk to me, please.

Nathan quietly responded, My wife, it’s my wife…I saw her, she’s back. Nathan whispered it so quietly that Racquel barely heard him.

You saw who, Racquel asked, who did you see?

Turning sharply around while removing Racquel’s hand from his shoulder, I said I saw my wife! I saw Aliyah; the so-called new savior. The being I’ve been looking for. The very person that is here\created to end me is a girl…that girl is my wife. Well, right now a much younger version of my wife anyway.

In shock, Racquel dropped to her knees directly in front of her master. That’s not possible. Wait, you ran into God awhile back, didn’t you say he was going to make it up to you? Is this his plan on making things right? Holy shit Nathan, did she remember you? What is she like? Does Lucifer know? Holy crap this is huge! Racquel said as she got off the floor and began to pace. Nathan, if Lucifer finds out, he will kill her for sure then torture you. Lucifer will then send you to the lowest level of hell for allowing her to live. Wait, did you let her live, you didn’t kill her, did you, or did you?

Nathan pushed his rambling servant to the side and began to pace. No Racquel, it is possible it’s very possible, and yes I kept her alive…I didn’t even hurt her. Are you fucking kidding me, how could I? It’s my wife’s face, her voice her scent, and apparently her soul. Sara or the so-called savior has no idea. Apparently, God has a sick sense of humor or is possibly a lot smarter than I’ve given him credit for. He’s playing a large game of chess and found a way to use my wife as a pawn. He knows or thinks he knows I won’t touch her. And now, now after a century, I’m starting to feel again, and I hate it! Laughing a little, Nathan shook his head and said, This is just great, I’m turning human again, some kind of whimpering man! And of course, Lucifer doesn’t know. I have no intention of letting him find out. I must somehow keep this from him until I can think more clearly or know what to do. Hell, I’m still in shock.

Racquel began to speak when an echo from a loud knock on the door startled them both.

Get rid of whoever it is, I’m not in the mood for anything or anyone, Nathan said as he sat back down on the side of his bed. He grabbed whiskey, poured it into a glass then quickly swallowed it down as he lay on his back then closed his eyes. He thought of every detail…every detail of Aliyah’s face and heard her voice like a soft, comforting tune playing within his head over and over. With his eyes closed and her face planted firmly in his mind, he only thought of seeing her again. He missed her and wished he could go back and say more, hold her, and never let go.

"Nathan what have you done?" Ran through Nathan’s mind over and over. His wife’s beautiful voice was angry, angrier than he had ever heard it before. The disappointment in her tone tormented him. He had never felt so much shame from her. Although she eventually forgave him, he could see the look of emptiness towards him in her eyes. He had never felt so ashamed. The day before events clouded over any other thought. Not only was his wife around but so were the memories of his past life…his family. He hadn’t thought about them in so long and fought hard to keep it that way. Now, the memories were not only back but so was the emptiness, loneliness, and torturous pain.

Nathan, oh my God, what have you done? Aliyah yelled as she stared in disbelief. Now being able to focus in on her surroundings, she saw the almost dead pregnant woman and the bleeding angel lying only inches away from her. Nathan! Aliyah yelled. Fix them, heal them…undo all of this now!

Michael, get off of me! Nathan yelled as he squirmed his way free from Michael’s tight grip. Nathan closed his eyes tight, rubbed them, and then slowly reopened with his head turned slightly in disbelief.

I’m still here, and yes it’s me, now fix this! Aliyah said as she pointed down.

Nathan slowly walked over to his wife, wanting nothing more than to touch her, kiss and hold her. He reached out only to have his hand pushed away by Adams standing beside Aliyah or the so-called savior…Sara.

Close enough, Nathan, I don’t know what the hell is going on, but she’s still Sara, and you’re not touching her!

Aliyah turned around to face one of Sara’s so-called protectors or friends and said, Adams, you are a good guardian. I am, or Sara rather, is lucky to have you. But you need not worry about him (nodding her head in Nathan’s direction) I got this. Aliyah said with her familiar Sara smile that Adams loved so much.

Nope, no, no way, this is NOT possible! Nathan yelled out as he stepped back attempting to remove himself from the situation. Nice trick, very clever…I’m not falling for this shit!

Nathan, look at me! Aliyah yelled. You know who I am, and you will fix this. Fix it now before it’s too late. Husband please, I beg you to fix this!

Turning to Michael, Nathan yelled, It’s going to take a lot more than this to get to me! As Nathan hollered the wind began to pick up a little, carrying a familiar scent. Whipping his head around, and then following where the scent was coming from…his wife. The comforting scent of vanilla was coming from his wife and seemed to be getting stronger as she angered. Aliyah had always seemed to have a natural smell, very similar to vanilla cake. He remembered teasing her about it, telling her he could eat her up. He would then give her a wink causing her to blush. He wanted to believe it was her but knew the angels or higher up could play tricks as his master often did, but this was a new low even for them.

‘Fine, if you are my wife, prove it! What is your favorite food and why? Give me details that only Aliyah would know and told only me."

Slowly walking over to her husband then gently placing her hand on Nathans cheek, Aliyah whispered, Really, that’s how I must prove to you, even though you know how much it pains me to even think of?

Nathan removed Aliyah’s hand and whispered impatiently, Tell me why then I’ll believe and do as you ask. I’ll clean up the trash on the ground and heal them.

Aliyah couldn’t believe what her husband was asking of her. She took a deep breath, preparing herself for reliving the past. Hesitantly, Aliyah whispered, My mother, my mother loved blueberries. My father told me that before I was born, my mother loved to pick blueberries. She would whistle and hum to herself as she pulled them, not realizing how many she would eat. By the time she got home, my father would laugh because although she had picked dozens, only a few would be left in her basket. He didn’t mind though, he hated them. He didn’t like the texture. When my mother went into labor with me, she was picking blueberries and alone. Some travelers heard her screams. By the time they reached her, she was almost gone having only enough life left to give birth to me then…Aliyah paused and felt the tears run down her cheeks as she whispered, she died. By the time one of the travelers’ found and brought my father to us, my mother’s body was already becoming cold. After that day, my father loved blueberries or maybe hated them still but ate them almost daily because it reminded him of his wife…my mother. After he told me the story, I began eating them. My sisters hated them. It was one of the things my father and I had in common. Almost everything I did reminded him of her. He would often say if he didn’t know any better, her life went into me as I was born. Aliyah paused then wiped her escaping tears.

So, blueberries, blueberries are my favorite because they remind me of the mother I never met. Are you happy now?

Without thinking, momentarily forgetting who he was, the past, his anger, his decades of needed revenge all suddenly gone as Nathan stared at his wife; He then slowly waved his hand over Sep and Amanda immediately undoing all he had done. He then leaned forward, lifting his wife’s chin he said, I’m sorry I’m so sorry for making you go down that road…I’ve missed you so much, I’m so sorry for putting you through that, forgive me.

My dear husband, I understand, I promise I do. I can’t imagine how much you hurt…my god everything you saw, the blame you must carry. Nathan, you need to let it go...let it all go.

Nathan dropped to his knees and then leaned his forehead into his wife’s stomach in shame.

Aliyah gently touched the back of Nathan’s head. She loved the feel of his soft silky like hair and was comforted, knowing it hadn’t changed. In all the time that had passed since she had seen him, he looked no different. Nathan, listen to me. I can’t imagine the hell you went through that day. It wasn’t your fault. My sister had an evil brewing within that she was able to push out onto, almost, the entire town. My sister was jealous, everything was out of jealousy. She wanted you. I had no idea how she felt until that day. But I should have seen it. Stop blaming yourself, stop beating yourself up. Stop hurting people, especially innocent people. You must stop. None of it will bring us back or change anything. Aliyah lifted Nathan’s chin, Look at me, thank you for undoing this but going forward you have to stop hurting people. So many of the lives you’ve taken didn’t deserve it. Aliyah said as she watched Sep crawl over to Amanda and hold her tightly.

Um, guys, I don’t mean to interrupt or anything, Amanda said as she rubbed her belly and looked at Sep, something is wrong, I don’t feel so good. Amanda said as she continued to massage her stomach then instantly felt a sharp pain coming from what seemed like her entire body. She leaned backward, arching her back and with her stomach rising she screamed loudly.

Adams, who had been carefully watching Nathan and his every move to ensure Sara or this Aliyah’s safety suddenly looked at Amanda and knew. Oh crap, she’s in labor!

Gabriel knelt in front of Amanda and began to check. Sure enough, the baby was, in fact, coming and almost out but seem to be wrapped in her ambilocal cord.

Let’s get her to the hospital! yelled Adams.

‘Really, my dear Adams, do you not think we are capable?" Uriel said then asked for the rest of her brothers to be ready in case she needed them.

Sep’s wounds were pretty much gone, but without his wings, he felt weak and helpless. He could only comfort Amanda with his words and soft touch. He gently rubbed the side of Amanda’s face wishing he could do more. He grabbed Amanda’s hand and held it as tight as he could while placing small kisses on her forehead. Focus on the sound of my voice, it will be over soon.

Turning to Aliyah who was fixated on the new baby making its way into the world, Nathan whispered, I remember you giving birth like it were yesterday.

Aliyah quietly responded, Nathan, I have to leave soon. Make no mistake, this Sara person is significant. Remember her and I are one in the same. I’m within her. Sara will need all the help she can get. Husband, I forgive you. I understand why you’ve done all you have but the time for vengeance is over. Aliyah gently kissed Nathan on his lips. I have to go back now. Please know where I am that I’m happy and at peace. As for our son’s, well they have been raised as angels by higher angels. I’m pretty sure they are guardians somewhere. Please find them and give them my love. One day, you and I will meet again. You can then, fill me in on how they are. I’m sure they are as handsome as you. Please find them and look out for Sara…for me.

Nathan suddenly had an inner warmth fill his body. The kind of warmth he hadn’t had since before his family’s death. He then felt his own eyes get watery with his heart beating loudly. Aliyah, I love you. Nathan lowered his head, then pressed his lips against his wife’s…only to be forcefully pushed away.

What? Don’t touch me; get away from me yelled Sara as she swiped Nathan’s hand away from her face. Get away from me you monster. As Sara got angrier and angrier, she felt her eyes light up with her fist’s forming tightly as her body got warm then warmer…preparing for a fight.

Sara, NO! Yelled Adams as he grabbed her from behind, holding her arms down firmly. Her strength surprised Adams and knew he wouldn’t be able to hold her much longer. Nathan, I think its best you leave. Sara, you need to calm down. Breath, go to your place…think of Seth! Think of your parents, family anything calming. There is much to explain but later…not now, trust me.

Nathan stood frozen like a statue. He couldn’t move or didn’t want to. Although his wife or this Sara was taking on a whole new look with angelic abilities, it was still his wife…his beautiful wife. He couldn’t stop staring.

Nathan, said Michael, I think it’s time you go. Much as happened for us all to grasp. Please go before Adam’s over there is no longer able to control our little yet powerful angel.

Nathan laughed a little then quickly responded, Isn’t that what you want? Isn’t that why she was created? This is her chance and who better to rid of me than my own wife? Nathan said has he kept his eyes fixated on her.

Not today, it wouldn’t be right. Nathan you need to leave. Thank you for healing Sep and Amanda. We are much appreciative, but you need to go. Michael said as he put his hand on Nathan’s shoulder.

Nathan immediately removed Michael’s hand, took a few steps backward then quickly disappeared before anyone could see the emotion the real emotion taking him over. He didn’t want to leave; he wanted to be with his wife forever. Knowing she was around and alive but not able to be with her was more than torture. He began to hurt, a familiar hurt like the day his family was killed which was a feeling he had planned on never experiencing again.

    CHAPTER 2

    Right or Wrong

No! I’m not going to calm down! Why, why would you let him go? I had him; I had him, I could have ended him then and there. He is part of the reason I’m here. Why in the hell would you want me to let him go Adams? I don’t understand. I don’t get it! Sara yelled.

Sara, you need to calm down. The Arch’s didn’t touch or hurt Nathan either because it wouldn’t have been right. It wasn’t the right thing to do. You all let him go, for good reason. My God Sara, he took back what he did to Amanda and Sep, he took it back. Now, she’s in there holding their baby. It wouldn’t have been right to hurt him, let alone kill him. Adams explained but knew Sara was still not satisfied. The look of anger was all over her face and aimed at him.

I’m so frustrated and don’t know what to think. I’m confused and mad. I need Seth…I miss him so much right now. I need to talk to him. He could help me understand. Because none of that makes any sense Adams. Nathan is evil, pure evil. You made me let him go. He left unharmed. Nathan has a part in why Seth is in so much pain, and you made me let him go. I will never forgive you for this. Sara yelled as she removed Adams firm grip from her arm then ran through the exit doors. She needed to be alone and had no desire to see the baby or anyone else. Sara had somehow lost track of earlier events that day which was very frustrating. When she came out of some sleep or trance, she found her biggest enemy standing in front of her. Nathan was standing in front of her and appeared to be trying to kiss her. The Nathan, who had been trying to find her and destroy her, was trying to kiss her. Thinking over and over…why was he attempting to, what, make out with me? Adams and the Archs were ok with him getting that close to me? What the hell?

Everything was more confusing than ever. Sara didn’t want to see Adams, the new baby or the Archs. Running as fast as she could she headed to the church. Knowing it was a bad idea, Sara didn’t care. She didn’t care how Seth acted or looked she needed to see him, talk to him and know he was ok. After earlier events that day she needed Seth at home and wished he would be well enough to come back. Running through the woods, the closer she got, the faster she became. She imagined what Seth looked like what he would act like when a disturbing thought occurred, what if he doesn’t remember me? What then? It had been months since Sara had to leave Seth at the church. Since then she had received word of the disturbing roller coaster ride of personalities and emotions Seth was going through. According to Father Jim, most of the time, Seth wanted to hurt her. Then, there were other times where Seth missed Sara. There were other days Seth seemed more like a beast than human and didn’t seem to remember Sara at all. Not having an update in over two weeks worried her and made her question seeing Seth. Sara suddenly stopped and felt sick thinking about which personality of Seth she would run into. Looking straight ahead and knowing that Adams or one of the Archs would be coming for her soon, she went ahead anyway.

Finally, in front of the old church doors and surprised by how fast she had gotten there, Sara went to lift the lever on the wooden door when she heard leaves being cracked by quiet footsteps behind her.

"Ha, I guess I have gotten a lot faster, faster than you anyway. I figured you would beat me here." Sara turned around to confront Adams, but to her surprise, it wasn’t Adams. It was her friendly, furry friend, Forte, sitting very still and appeared to be waiting for her next move.

Forte, what are you doing here boy? Sara knelt and rubbed the wolf behind his ears causing him to lean in towards her. After finishing her hello to Forte, she stood back up and turned to the church doors when she instantly felt Forte bite the bottom of her shirt and then walked backward slowly.

Really, not you too? I need to see him if only for a minute, now let go. Sara tugged at the bottom of her shirt to free it, but it was no use. Forte had a secure grip then growled as Sara tried.

Knowing she had on a tank top underneath, she thought about taking her shirt off, but with Forte getting closer, growling, and holding onto her shirt even tighter with his sharp teeth she knew he wasn’t going to let her in.

Giving up and collapsing to the ground, Fine! I won’t ok, I won’t go in. Geez, what is it with everyone?

Forte finally let go then placed his head softly on her lap; letting out a soft whimper as if he felt her pain.

Forte, this is all so hard. I feel as if multiple people are inside me, consistently fighting over my destiny and being just a normal girl. For example, that couple that hurt their daughter, I wanted to kill them both. She began remembering when she walked into their home and instantly felt the pain and agony the little girl had been experiencing:

Seeing the scared little Halie on the floor with her father about to hit her again caused Sara to lose her temper in a way she hadn’t before. Then Halie’s mom attacking Sara made her anger worse. Sara only meant to defend herself against the mother, but her strength was more than she had anticipated. She remembered killing the abusive mother and felt no remorse. She wanted to do the same to the abusive father but didn’t. Sara knew if Lauren and Uriel hadn’t shown up when they did and hadn’t looked so disappointed in her, she would have killed the father too. But they ended up fixing what she had done and brought the mother back to life.

"There was no guilt or sorrow after killing the mother. I was more worried about what would happen to me than hurting her. So, what kind of angel does that make me, huh? I feel like God made a mistake with me. This job should have been someone else’s, not mine. I’d rather be average or the quiet girl with no friends. Well, except for Seth, I’d give anything to go back where I watched him in the barn doing his chores. I’d love to go back to that, but I suspect that kind of normal is long gone. Forte, what will happen if I do have to face Seth one day? I can’t hurt him, yet I won’t allow him to hurt anyone I love. All of it is so exhausting, so overwhelming. I really miss him. Sara rubbed Forte and felt his calmness underneath her hand which made her calm as well. She laid down next to her protective wolf and then looked out into the huge dark sky filled with millions of stars. She stroked Forte lightly across his head and his back. Before she knew it, her eyes got heavy then heavier. Her last thought before finally giving into needed sleep was of Seth. She quietly whispered, I miss you Seth, so much. I wish you were here." Not meaning too, Sara fell asleep outside the church doors on the cold, hard ground.

Only feet away standing old but strong was a wall of the church. Just on the other side in a lower level, lye Seth staring at the ceiling. About to fall asleep, Seth suddenly sat up, thinking he caught a faint hint of a familiar vanilla scent. He focused more and took a deep breath then heard a soft voice; his favorite voice filled his head.

"I miss you Seth, so much." Immediately recognizing the voice, Seth smiled and felt warm tears build in his eyes. He knew his little blue eyes was close by and talking to him. Seth whispered back in hopes she would hear him too, I miss you little one, I can’t wait to get back to you. He paused for a few in hopes she would hear
