Grammar Savvy, Reading Ready - Roswitha Geyss

Introduction: Time to Play the Game!

Am English grammar makes many learners break out in a cold sweat. The correct use of verb tenses, the differences between adjectives and adverbs, if-clauses, the peculiarities of indirect speech (including backshift of tenses), the correct use of pronouns, participles, gerunds, and infinitives - if all this makes you shiver, then you’ve come to the right place! This book will help you to replace the nervous flutter with pleasant shivers. There is one thing I can promise you: Once you start to revise and practise the grammar phenomena, only Dracula's blood lust, the obsession of a Victor Frankenstein, or the horrible events at Thornfield Hall will make you sweat in fear!

Each chapter in this exercise book is structured as follows:

    1. Summary of the most important grammar rules including concrete examples of their application

    2. Functional Check: clear and concise graphical representation of the above-mentioned grammar rules

    3. Exercises with increasing degree of difficulty (easy to difficult)

    4. Excerpts from mostly gothic novels (Dracula, Frankenstein, Jane Eyre, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Raven …), which are intended to deepen the existing knowledge of grammar and to ignite the love for literature.

    5. Safety Check at the end of each chapter, which again recalls the most important grammar rules.

The exercises in this book cover the proficiency levels B2 to C2 according to CEFR³, and NATO STANAG 6001⁴ levels 2 to 3. The aim of this book is a playful approach to grammar and English language, and the idea of competition among different learners is highly encouraged. For each correct answer you get points (depending on the level of difficulty 1-3 points). At the end you add these points and can track your individual progress on a progress scale!

This book was inspired by years of experience in teaching foreign languages and especially English (including English for Specific Purposes in the business and military sectors). It is a continuation and supplement to the grammar companion Englische Grammatik mit Köpfchen und ein bisschen (Un)sinn (with special focus on German native speakers; Tredition, 2020). The material provided here has been used for several years in the English Language Skills Proficiency Training (LSPT) on STANAG Level 3 at the Theresan Military Academy, the world’s oldest training facility for officers. Not without pride, the author can claim that the success rate of her students is a whopping 100%!

Never say Nevermore again and start today!
