The Foundation - Grubby Ash

Prologue

Just what did I get myself into?

Just what did I get myself into?

Sargent Jordan Bales had not considered the fact that joining the St. Williams foundation would come to be so . . . so wrong. So wrong in fact that he did not even want to be alive at this point. He strode purposefully down a series of corridors containing several anomalies, some were organic, some were human-ish.

Ish, Huh? Is that the word we use for living creatures nowadays?

Some of the humanoid anomalies were fully capable of speech, some would say awful, awful things that no human being should ever hear. Some would say things like I’m gonna pull out your eyes ...Just you wait until they let us go, I’ll come after you first You look tasty, I would enjoy ripping your torso from your legs. That stuff was the least of what was creepy, some of the anomalies would sit, and just be very quiet, he had liked quiet but not so long ago was that pleasure taken away.

Finally, he had arrived at the colonel’s office with his reports, documents, diagnostics and estimates of the expenses of the damages done by the larger and more dangerous anomalies. Colonel, I have the papers. The damage was extensive as it reads. Jordon said, the nervous edge on his voice was undeniable, but he soldiered on no matter the consequences You’re late Bales, I expected more from you. Did take the route past those . . . what do you call them again?

The colonel responded. Jordon hesitated to answer, but soldiered on bravely The Zaratrons, they call themselves. Jordon said back. Colonel rubbed his bottom lip in thought as Jordon placed his papers down, in front of the colonel. The colonel sighed before speaking again Bales, -the colonel turns in his chair to face a window the size of the wall in his office- you see the St. Williams foundation hadn’t been made to rid the world of it’s impurities, but we – he waves his hand across the window, displaying the workers, scientists, and security guards all at work – have one important job. Saving. The. World. Saving the world from those freaks and monsters out there. Do you want a drink, Bales?.

The colonel got up from his seat and went over to a small cupboard, he brought out two glasses and a bottle of whiskey. Jordon stood and blinked many times before saying C- colonel I have to decline that offer, as alcohol is not permitted on Foundation property. Jordon had not been an avid drinker, nor had he wanted to drink. The colonel smiled and said Bales, I formally insist that you sit down and have a drink with your colonel.

The colonel said in an insisting voice, Jordon thought for a second and quickly decided that if he declines, he may not impress the colonel. Jordon sat in a chair just opposite the colonel’s, the colonel took a seat before continuing with conversation with Jordon Bales, I am going to give you this pleasure when I say this, that I, Colonel James Frank, formally promote of your status from sergeant to senior head of command.

The colonel said with enthusiasm he had not recognized. Jordon was astonished, no not astonished, shocked that the colonel had given such a promotion. He must have made the colonel laugh because the next few seconds the colonel had been staring at him Sorry, colonel d-did you just give me a promotion that high? I mean I’m grateful, but it’s too much really. Jordon said quickly, he knew he had stammered but that did not matter now. Now he was no longer a working sergeant but a senior commanding officer, the colonel smirked, a rare thing to see if you were new to the foundation. The colonel further said Please, Bales call me James from now on, and oh, before you leave, your uniform will be waiting for you at the front desk and if you do so, please take the Hallway-B route not A. A’s longer than B, and there are fewer security measures.

James said and further looked at Jordon with the sense of a love for a son, or any other form of pride. Jordon got up to leave when James, stopped him Uh, Bales before you leave make sure to say ‘Hi’ to the receptionist for me, ok? James said with a sly smirk on his face, Jordon nodded and further proceeded to walk out of the office and march, not walk, but march towards the reception area.

Jordon was tired to say the least, his eyes felt heavy, and his legs were wobbly and weak, he thought maybe he should he head down toward the bogs too wash up and straight to the bunks where he slept for most of his 10 years of military of service, he then reminisced to when he first joined the military when he was 21 then, now he felt old. Jordon had not been the quietest person in a room, and neither will he be, he was lost in thought before suddenly realizing that the emergency sirens were going off.
