I went into the living room, found the remote, and switched the television on. Across all the major news networks, the images were the same. It was almost like they had the video on a loop while talking heads chatted over it. It was of my husband in handcuffs. The FBI was perp walking him out of his law office. Commentators listed a litany of charges: racketeering, securities fraud, tax evasion, and so much more. This was also part of an ongoing Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO) Act investigation. These would be those real estate tycoons I mentioned earlier, and looping video also included separate FBI actions arresting my husband’s clients. I should have seen the signs years ago, but I turned a blind eye to it. I stared at the TV in absolute horror once a realization hit me.

For all these years, I have actually been married into the mafia and never knew it.

I just burst out in tears. I slumped backwards into the sofa and sobbed into the palms of my hands. My phone vibrated a notification. I didn’t look at it at first. It rang, and I didn’t answer. The notifications began to pile up quickly. If this was my husband finally trying to tell me what was going on, I didn’t want to hear it. It didn’t want to hear his stupid fucking voice. If he called, I would just have screamed we’re getting divorced and hung up. This really was the final line for me. Apparently, my husband decided to cross that years ago and never bothered to tell me. Even now, I don’t even want to type his name. Still, it needs to be said; this was the moment when I absolutely realized he needed to be out of me and my son’s life for good. And how was I going to explain all of this to my boy? I began crying again.

I had to turn the ringer and notification off. Everybody in my family and his were texting and calling. Plus, local and national media had made a few attempts, but they weren’t insistent or anything. Thank god they didn’t mob my home. What was going down in New York seemed to get all of the attention. Besides, in the grand scheme of things, my husband was just a legal flunky and facilitator – the man with all the records and ledgers. A much more high stakes drama was playing out in Manhattan than my husband’s. Powerful people were being indicted, of course. I decided I wasn’t going to answer any phone calls. As for texts, there was one exception. Troy had sent me another.

I typed out a response: Come over. Now.
