To every person with the heart of a child

    Birdie is back

    Swoosh.

Orange bird legs churned and skidded in the grass as black wings pressed down hard. A blackbird came in for a fast landing in Wendell’s backyard.

Birdie, Birdie! You are alive! Wendell and Bobbie could hardly believe their eyes. Joy overwhelmed them.

Suddenly, the blackbird transformed into a pixie.

Birdie, we didn’t think we’d ever see you again after Dozer shot you, said Bobbie.

Oh no, Dozer! Wendell exclaimed. I almost forgot that you were with us.

Wendell and Bobbie quickly turned to check on him. He had never seen Birdie before. Dozer sat quietly on the grass. His mouth hung open, and his eyes stared without blinking.

Do you think he is in shock? Bobbie wondered out loud. He isn’t moving, not even an eyeball.

The huge, strong kid who usually commanded everyone’s attention and who always looked like he could defend himself against any foe now looked like he had passed out.

Bobbie touched his shoulder. He’s stiff as a statue.

Eventually—it seemed like a few minutes but was only a few seconds—he was able to mumble, Who…what…is that?

Wendell assured him that the transformation from a blackbird to a pixie wasn’t spooky or unusual. You are okay, Dozer. Birdie is our friend.

Wendell decided to give Dozer a few more minutes to wake from his nightmare before explaining anything more. His attention returned to Birdie. We missed you, Birdie. He pictured that horrible BB that had made Birdie disappear. I was afraid we’d never see you again.

Bobbie, however, laughed and smiled because Birdie had just begun to jump in the air and click his heels.

See, I’m fine, good as new, Birdie declared. I was just gone for a little while, but I had to mend a bit before I could come back. The little pixie smiled a huge grin from one pointed ear to the other to reassure Wendell and Bobbie that everything was okay now.

Then the pixie asked, Who is your new friend? Birdie knew who Dozer was, but out of politeness he pretended not to know because they hadn’t met yet. Birdie knew Dozer had just been randomly shooting into the yard. He didn’t shoot me on purpose, so really there is nothing to forgive. There is nothing keeping us from being great friends.

Wendell and Bobbie looked over at Dozer again. His mouth still hung open and his large eyes stared into space.

Finally, he mumbled again, Who…? What did I just see?

It’s Birdie, our friend, Bobbie explained again. Birdie is a blackbird and pixie that lives in story and comes to visit us. He always comes at just the right time too. Now he has come for you. Bobbi smiled at Dozer. Birdie flies us into story.

Dozer, still stunned and dazed, didn’t understand anything Bobbi was saying.

Bobbie looked at his eyes, which were now spinning around. Dozer’s eyes look like small balls bouncing around from side to side in a glass orb.

Wendell touched his shoulder and looked into those rolling eyes in hopes of helping them slow down. You will be okay. What you just saw was scary, but when you know Birdie and go to story, you’ll understand that Birdie isn’t scary at all, plus you will have a lot of fun.

Go? Go where? Dozer began to get up as if he wanted to leave. He brushed the grass from his jeans and took a few steps forward. I don’t want to go anywhere. Besides, my aunt keeps a close eye on me, and I can’t leave my yard without telling her. Dozer had never liked staying around his house before, but today he was relieved that he had limitations. Home looked safer than a ride with a pixie. This is crazy. He shook his head, trying to wake up from this bad dream.

Birdie slowly edged over to Dozer and stood next to him. Just then a gentle breeze rippled over them, touching Dozer’s face and quieting his fear. The breeze seemed to come from the leaves overhead, or maybe it was from the pixie standing next to him. Wherever it came from, it gave him peace. He wasn’t sure how he felt, but at least his eyes moved normally in his head now. He wasn’t afraid anymore. His heart beat without pounding in his chest as if it wanted out. He was slowly returning to normal even with a strange creature standing next to him.

Well, Dozer said as he felt the gentle breeze quieting him. I guess I’m okay. He looked at Wendell and Bobbie. Because I trust you guys. I just don’t know what you mean by going to story. I don’t understand. I don’t know how Birdie can take me anywhere, much less into a story. Besides, the blackbird is not very big, and I look like a giant next to the pixie.

Wendell explained how easy it was to fly on Birdie’s back. You just get on and away you go.

Fly on whose back? The blackbird’s or the pixie’s? Dozer stared at Wendell. Neither answer seemed possible to him.

We fly on the back of the blackbird. There are reins to hold on to.

Oh, that makes me feel better. We will fly through the air on a bird and only hold on to thin reins? Doesn’t sound safe to me.

Bobbie chimed in. Well, it is a mystery. I don’t understand it either, but it is safe and it is so much fun. I saw Cinderella, and Wendell saw the ugly duckling and Snow White. We see our favorite stories there. And maybe you will see your favorite story.

Yeah. Wendell agreed with Bobbie as he looked over at Dozer, who still looked doubtful.

Are they really real stories? Dozer asked. Besides, I can see real stories on TV. I don’t have to go anywhere with Birdie. He stuffed his hands defiantly in his jean pockets and said, I’m not going. I’m staying with my two feet on the ground.

Bobbie reassured him that the ride was safe and that the stories were real. They are alive, but the only way to believe is to go.

Dozer still hesitated. I can’t go anywhere. I have to go home soon.

Oh, that’s no problem because time is different there. Wendell smiled, reassuring Dozer again that everything would be fine. We can be gone for hours with Birdie, and when we come back, only a few minutes will have passed by here. Your aunt won’t have time to miss you.

Oh was all Dozer mumbled. Hoping to postpone the scary ride, he said, Maybe that would be fun another day.

Birdie began to hop from one foot to the other. I’m back, so let’s go to Dozer’s favorite story today. He had been waiting with the kids for too long and was excited to fly them into story again. I really like stories. They are fun, he said. What is your favorite story, Dozer?

Dozer looked at the ground and then at Wendell. I don’t know. I’ve never read a book. I never wanted to. He hesitated and then said, "But I
