Scares of Monsters Past
Sometimes when the moon is full, the shadows on the wall
Take on ghastly, scary forms and start to scare us all.
Are monsters real?
we start to ask. "I think I see one there,
Lurking just beneath the bed or just behind that chair."
Our strong imaginations start to mold the shapes and forms.
We all see things inside our minds that simply aren’t the norm.
As we three kids--Jacob, Paul and Carla--tried to sleep,
The wispy winds were whistling. We didn’t say a peep.
Outside we heard a monster knocking off a trashcan lid.
It could have been an alley cat, but who can say what did?
And Jacob was the first to yell, my brother Paul yelled too,
Father, father… monsters! Please come help us or we’re through.
The lights came on. Our father groaned and tried to crack his spine,
And at the edge of Jacob’s bed, he told us we were fine.
"I told you once. I’ll tell you twice, tell each and every one,
There’s no such thing as monsters—but monster scares are fun."
He suddenly pulled out his book and told us with a smile,
"Let’s start with monsters past, my kids, to green we’ll turn the dial.
On red we’ll stop in present day and see the here and now.
And last, a blue so nebulous, all you will think is--wow!"
And as he dialed up the past upon this time machine,
The awesome glowing ink immersed us all in brilliant green.
"Now, here’s a tale of monsters past, back in the feudal age.
When castles, knights and dragon fights were all the tall tale rage.
There was a boy named Newton, with his rosy cheeks of pink--"
The book opened up wider still, and then suddenly
