THE LADY CAT

They were equally brave and kind and clever. “My kids are all wonderful” the king mused. “Which of them should rule after me?”

He summoned them to his throne room.

“My children,” he said in a firm voice, “I wish to retire, and I need a pet to keep me company. Whichever of you finds me the cutest dog in the world will have my throne!”

The three siblings were puzzled, but they agreed to do as he asked. Before they set off, though, they shook hands and agreed that no matter who won, they would always love and respect each other.

The princess travelled east, and the elder prince travelled west. The younger prince went south.

“I'm sure there are many wonderful hounds to be found there!”
