Chapter One:

It was sunrise when Aquentis woke up. He hated the cold and living at Cape Wrath in northern Scottish highlands did not help. Laural loved it here and for her, he would endure anything. He descended several flights of stairs of the large manor house. At the bottom he entered the kitchen Looking around he gathered up some food for him and Laurel then headed back to his warm bed and warmer wife. As he ascended the stairs to their bedroom he was thankful that the house was carpeted even heated tiles felt cold to him.

He approached the bedroom with its double oak doors that are engraved and had iron straps to hold it together. He entered the bedroom and set the food on a nightstand near the bed, gently he lifted the covers and gazed down at her. He felt happy as he had found someone who made him feel wonderful to be alive again. She was a vision of beauty that would rival Aphrodite herself, at five foot two with a slim build. Her eyes are ice blue with tiniest green flake in them that shows up when her mood changes. Her long angelic hair hung down her cream colored skin that completed each other.

Aquentis slipped into bed with her and ever so gently nudge her, Good morning my lover, it is time to wake up.

Laurel stretched and yawned her hair a mess, rolling over she looked at him, Only you can be happy and awake this early in the morning. What time is it?

Just a little past sunrise my Countess. Laurel was next in line to be the matriarch of her family. At one time they would have been considered royalty now they are notable family.

Laurels started to get upset. Don’t call me that, you know I hate it. Beside your ties to royalty is far stronger than mine.

Aquentis chuckled, there is that sharp tongue I love would you like to put it to use?

Don’t you ever get tired? I need some food, coffee and more rest if you want to continue from last night.

They sat up and enjoyed breakfast in bed, You know you could have had one of the servants bring this up to us.

You know how I feel about other people serving me.

I know, but it is not 14000 B.C. It still feels funny saying that. It’s the twentieth-first century.

I know Laurel but I still don’t like people being my servants, and if you think that it feels funny saying it you should try living that long.

Aquentis gave her a deep and pleading look You know my love my offer still stands.

Don’t start this again Quinn.

Ok, just offer again, that’s all. You are set in your ways and nothing is going to stop you. Damn you are a hard-headed and stubborn woman.

Got that right and don’t you ever forget it, mister. And don’t even try to put that, that whammy or hypnotism or whatever the hell you do to people to me, you know what it is you do.

Now get dressed. We have a long way to go to Edinburgh to see my physician. Unless you want to reconsider and fly us there, we could be there by nightfall. Laural loved flying with Aquentis, his arms wrapped around her keeping her safe as they flew above the ground. She loved the freedom of it.

No, I am starting to believe that it was those night time flights that caused this.

Will the children be there? Laural quickly changed the subject. he gave her a knowing look as this was a subject neither wanted to talk about.

Yes. was all he said at first.

Alexander and Arianna will be flying in by the time we get there. Sara should arrive about the same time they do.

He looked up a Laural, And him?

Aquentis sighed. Mason? do not know about him for sure. He will not talk to me or Alexander or Arianna. He barely talks to Sara except to yell at her calling her a traitor and ungodly daughter of a minion of the devil or something to that effect. She read enough from him to know that he would most likely be there.

The door to their bedroom opened an older gentleman stood in the doorway. Your automobile is ready Sir and Madam.

Thank you, Duncan. They both said at the same time. As they were leaving Duncan asked, "

Duncan was a servant of Laurel’s family. They insisted he accompany us after we were married. Duncan’s family has served for generations in her family.

When should we expect you back?

In a little over a week, Aquentis said to him.

Very good then and Godspeed to you both, the elderly servant left the room.

A few miles into our trip Laurel looked at him and said, Tell me a story Aquentis, tell me the one about how you were first made an immortal.

Again, you should know it by heart already.

I know, but I like it when you tell it

Ok if you want to hear it again.

‘I was born on one of the many islands that made up the archipelago of Atlantis around 14320 B.C. The Island chain stretched several thousand miles and had several hundred islands. It started in the north at the Azores, and then stretched to the west at the Canary Islands. It then turned to the south at Cape Verde, and back to the east to the Caribbean islands.

I was the second son of a very important temple and monument builder. Being the second oldest son had its’ privileges. I had a lot of leeway with my father. He was not too meddlesome in my life as long as I did my job in looking for new sites to build on.

One day I was told to go to the islands to the east. These islands had savages living on them, and I was truly fearful for my life. On the day I left I took some weapons with me. I took my sword, mace, and sling. We were not some great technology advanced civilization as told in the stories. We were as advanced as the Romans around 70 C.E.

Before I left my room I took one last look around and saw mementos of my life here, a cedar driftwood box that contained a lock of hair of my girlfriend’s hair Sibylla.

My most loyal friend in the whole world, my dog Nomish, had been with me on many hunting trips and had tracked down many a fowl for our dinner. He had protected me in many battles with friends, family, and foe, most of the time it was my brother.

I walked over to my dresser and pulled open the third drawer. I lifted up some clothes to reveal the medals that I had won in the battles the Atlanta army had with other nations. I listened very carefully to make sure that no one was near. I turned to the far wall of my room and pushed on the wall, and it gave away slightly. I then pulled on the exposed part while pushing at the same time. By pushing and pulling it unlocked a secret part of the wall. This part hid my most prized possession. This possession was a sword that I had forged by the local blacksmith. I had worked for him one summer as payment for it. I had to do so without my family knowing as it would have brought disgrace upon us. We were akin to the king and were of distant noble blood.

The sword was made from ore that I had found in an ancient pit. The blacksmith said that he had never seen an ore such as this. He said that it would make a sword so strong and sharp that its equal would never be seen. I worked all summer on it until the fall came, the traditional time for Atlantean warfare. With this sword, I brought great honor to our house and a great disgrace to my brother and father.

I felt a great sense of dread that something truly catastrophic was going to happen on this island. I left my room and proceeded down the marble hallway.

It had golden leaf inlays of various décor and designs in the wall and floor. I met my older brother Diego. He stands three inches taller than me and has the blond hair of our father. I took the hair of our mother.

My brother was a mean and ill-tempered, his only purpose in life was to live the life of high court like our father. To know all the important people and to mock all of the people who was not his equal in status. Being the named after of our father, which was the custom at the time, compounded his ill temperament.

He merely smiled at me and said ‘Do not get eaten, you know these savages have eaten all who have trespassed on their land.’

We had been adversaries the whole of our lives. Whatever I did he would try and better it. He could not best me on the battlefield. This enraged not only him but enraged our father as well.

‘Then why is father sending me and not somebody else like one of his workers or servants?’ I said to him

‘Because you are neither the heir nor a valuable worker, the workers do as they are told unlike you. You are easily replaceable with another child.’ He said.

‘That’s not true.’ I replied back as I shoved him back against the wall. Even though in the back of my mind I knew it was true. Diego merely laughed and continued down to his room. This was his way of taunting me and letting me know he was still the alpha son.

I proceeded down several levels of the spiral marble staircase with its teakwood banisters and its golden inlays. Our family home was typical of most homes whose family was related to the king. It was a three-story with marble and other precious stones, many bedrooms, and a servant's quarts in the back. Like most royal families we had several servants. I made friends with all of them.

As I proceeded down I would pass several mosaics of our families and its past history on the way. The history stretched back several thousand years. When I reached the bottom floor I started to open the door that leads to the private dining area of our family. This is where we would eat from day to day.

Before I opened the door I could hear gentle sobbing. I opened the door and walked in to see my mother Olympia. She stood drenched in the sunlight of the morning sun, with her dark curly hair and tanned skin. She was wearing one of her finest robes made of silk and inlay with gold lions, the symbol of our house.

The symbol of the lion was partly my fault. I had fought in a war with a rebellious relative of the old king Tichon. The king said I had fought with the ferocity of the great lions of the plains. Then he changed the symbol of our house from the man cutting a stone to a lion in thanks. That only made things worse at home.

My mother turned to me with tears running down her face. This affirmed what Diego told me was the truth.

‘Please come back to us Aquentis. I would not know what to do if you did not. Promise me you will come back to us.’

It was as if she was begging me for more than just my sake.

‘I will mother, I promise you.’

I was fuming mad that my father had sent me on a suicide mission. I walked down the road passing the estates of other important families. My friend Furion’s family was only royal historians, not a very important job but it allowed them to live a life of privilege. Not only was Furion my best friend but he also was the second son and went through much the same stuff as I did.

His sister and I had been lovers for years. Her name was Sibylla and she was my first lover. We had pledged to be together forever if I could only have known then what I know now, maybe it would have been different. Sibylla is a picture of sheer beauty. She stands at five feet five and has golden blond hair that is halfway down her back. She sometimes wears it in a cock’s crown. Her eyes can only be described as emerald green. Her skin is slightly tanned and her body is trimmed, but so firm and soft to the touch.

‘Where do you go my love?’

‘To the island of the savages to find a site suitable to build a new grand temple, my father commands it.’

‘Do not go. It is a trap set for you and the other sons of great houses. Those fathers think that they are a disgrace upon their houses and names; Furion my own brother is being forced to go. He knows he will die there. Father told him it was to locate some missing relics that belong to the king’s family and that he did not have time to go himself.

I overheard my father talking to yours and other fathers that once far onshore the boatman was to leave all of you there and never to return. Aquentis your brother was there too.’

‘And if we refuse to leave the boat?’

‘Then the boatman and his men will try to kill you even if you manage to kill all the savages. You will be stranded for the rest of your lives. Please do not go.’

‘I must go my Sibylla if only to prove my father wrong and upon my return, I will have you as my wife if you so wish it,’ I said these words to her upon bended knee.

‘Yes, I do my love.’ She said these words with what I thought where tears of joy but turned out to be tears of sadness. She never meant them, thinking I would never return.

As I reached the ship I saw the other sons of noble houses. We settled down in our own quarters getting comfortable for our long journey. The journey would take about eleven days of travel. The captain assigned us hard duties onboard the ship and very little food and drink. This was in no doubt to weaken us to become easy prey and easier to control.

The day came that we landed and we all prepared to make for land. We gathered our weapons and started to the surface of the ship. The first wave had already gone ashore. The sounds of battle where everywhere, the savages had prepared. Most likely they had been told ahead of time that we were coming in order to ensure our deaths. I was to go in the second and final wave. From estimates, there were still about five hundred savages left and only one hundred and fifty of us. I knew that the savages would use the cover of the forest to attack as soon we were onshore. I had fought them before and they were bloodthirsty and fearless, but very slow-witted.

I ordered a fire started and mixed in some powder ingredients that caused a very heavy smoke. This would provide us with cover.

Until we could come up with a plan. We could hear them behind us waiting for us to enter the forest, and that’s when it hit me.

The forest is a powder keg of old dead wood and brush. It would consume them and drive them out in the open and to us." In the open, their numbers advantage would not be as important since we had more fighting experience. We started the fire and the woods went up like kindling. The heat was intense and the boat had sailed and long gone. The screams of the savages that were dying were painful to my ears.

As they emerged from the forest they looked like half man half forest creatures with pieces of the woods attached to them and mud smeared on their body. We first used our arrows to kill them at long distance. When they came closer we started to use our slings and spears and finally our swords. It was a bloody fight. Never in my years had I witnessed such violence. They were dropping like flies and so were my companions.

When at last there were only a few on each side left, we tried to retreat in order to better use our bows and arrows. But they had surrounded us. With only ten of us and at least thirty of them, it looked grim. The savages started their final attack. A hammer and anvil type plan, but this was an old plan and easily countered. Five of my men fell dead and eleven of theirs. That left only five of us and nineteen of them.

They gathered together in hope to attack each of us one at a time. This was a bad idea. Being together in a group made them an easy target. I had my men spread out. When they would attack one, the rest of us would close in around them and finish them off. This would be the final attack for all of us.

It was me this time who led off. I charged at them taking down six more of them bring their number to thirteen I lost the last of my warriors and my friend Furion. My friends managed to kill all but the last five. And I stood totally alone. The first was a tall savage. He stood about six foot three brandishing a rather large club. He did not stand a chance. As he charged at me I kicked sand in his eyes and cut him in two along his midsection. He had the look of surprise upon on his face. He was still alive and watching but not for long as he was losing blood fast.

I looked over at them and boldly I said, ‘Next.’

Then the second and third charged me thinking that two on one would finish me but they were dead wrong. I quickly killed the first one with a forward lunge turned and sidestepped the oncoming attacker. I then quickly spun around the opposite direction and decapitated him now only leaving two. I approached them carefully. One was very old and the other was quite young.

The young one charged headlong at me and in a full rage. I easily dodged his first attack and grabbed him around the throat. With his arms and legs in a rage, he tried to hit me anywhere he could. If he had been trained right he may have stood a chance, but as things were he did not. I grabbed the arm that held the knife around the wrist and brought it back trapping it with my knee and snapping it into. The boy screamed out in pain.

The old man had no expression on his face. I was growing tired of the boy's screams and with the edge of my hand I struck him in the throat and crushed his windpipe. I then turned him around to let the old man watch. I looked at him. He did not seem surprised that I was still alive.

‘So tell me old one who told you about my coming here.’

There was silence in the air and the only sound that broke it was the sound of the boy’s neck snapping.

‘Why your father did Aquentis.’

He had said it as if he had known it without a doubt. I could not stand anymore. I threw down the rest of my weapons. The old man looked rather confused. I reached up and over my right shoulder and drew the sword that I had forged.

This sword was not ordinary by no means. The steel had been folded more than ten thousand times making it ten times stronger than your steel of today. The blade was nearly three feet long and had one flat edge and the other edge was sharp enough to cut through a good size tree with ease. The hilt was of a lion with gold leaf and the shield at the top of the hilt was done in mini golden lions encircling it.

I walked toward him at a fast pace he drew a knife and a mace.

‘Useless.’

I thought to myself.

He swung at me with his mace. I used my hand on the flat end of my sword and blocked his attack, he was amazed at this. Never has anyone used a sword in this way and nobody had a sword like this. When his mace contacted with my sword it cut the tip off of his mace. He simply looked at his mace in disbelief. At that same moment, I kicked him hard in the lower ribs sending him several feet backward and screaming in pain. He struggled to his feet clutching his ribs in one hand and his knife in the other.

He raised his knife up over his head and charged screaming. He brought the knife down at me. I merely sidestepped and allowed him to sever his own arm on my sword. He lay there clutching his bloody stump. I looked down at him and said

‘Now old man how did this come to be.’

‘Your father came to our island with many others. They gave us gold to kill all of you. We thought that a bunch of rich spoiled kids would be easy.’

‘You were wrong, dead wrong!’ I said.

I began to kill him. He screamed out in agony as I hacked off his body parts in sheer delight. With his final breath of life, he said the words that would still haunt me to this day.

‘I curse you Aquentis of Atlantis, to walk this earth and to drink the blood of the living forever!’

This was not a mere old man but a shaman. At the end of his words, I fell to the ground and blacked out. I do not know how much time had passed before I awoke, but when I did my life had changed forever.

Chapter two:

As I awoke a strange feeling had filled my body. It was of hunger but not for food. Next, I noticed that all living things had an aura. The trees and the plants had auras but were very small. Suddenly I
