    Freedom of speech, due process, and equal protection are principles I have always lived by. I have defended bad people, bad speech, and bad acts in an effort to combat bad laws. But too many people only apply these principles selectively, favoring the rights of those they like.

    It is wrong to selectively praise and condemn civil libertarians based on the clients and causes that invoke the liberty at issue. If one opposes civil liberties in general, it is consistent to criticize those who defend them for any reason.

    The idea of free speech is being attacked by mainstream academics and politicians. They argue that the freedom to express negative views about disadvantaged people and progressive causes is patriarchal, colonialist, and even white supremacist.
