Since this short book is not meant to be an all-encompassing biography of Dolley Madison, you may want to know about her life and times. I have also provided a Timeline, in order to link together the important events in her life, and a section of the book titled Biographical Sketches, which includes brief biographies of some of the key individuals in the book.     When James Madison became the fourth president of the United States in 1809, America, less than four decades old, was just taking shape as a nation. Most Americans made their living off working the land, whether as freemen or in bondage. Traveling very far within the colonies was a hardship as roads were poor, railroads were only in their planning stages, and rivers were few; for most it was a bumpy ride on a horse or in a carriage.
