    Welcome to the book, William Penn: Founder of Pennsylvania: A Short Biography. This book is volume 62 of the 30 Minute Book Series, and as the name of the series implies, if you are an average reader this book should take less than an hour to read. Since this short book is not meant to be an all-encompassing biography of William Penn, you may want to know about his life and times. To help you with this, there are several good references at the end of this book. I have also provided a Timeline, in order to link together the important events in his life, and a section of the book titled Biographical Sketches, which includes brief biographies of some of the key individuals in the book. In the text, those individuals who are in one of the biographical sketches will have their name in bold print the first time they appear in the book.

    Introduction

    The voyages of Christopher Columbus to the New World opened the door for other explorers to discover new lands and plunder them for their riches. Spain and France were first in sponsoring exploration and colonization of the New World that lay to the west across the vast uncharted Atlantic Ocean. The Dutch and English were not far behind in their quest to build new empires. The first successful attempt to expand the British Empire into North America began in 1607 through the chartered Virginia Company at Jamestown. In the Virginia Company, subscribers in the form of shareholders had a financial stake in the colony. Less than two decades later, The Massachusetts Bay Company primarily made up of Puritans obtained a charter from the Crown to establish a colony in North America. Like all religious groups that didn’t adhere to the teachings of the Anglican faith, the Puritans
